I've seen a 2009 Laguna estate which has taken my fancy, everything seems ok in the add, it says the DPF has been removed, what are the implication of this?.

Nothing at the moment but there is talk of the NCT checking for this in the future, just talk mind you for a while now, nothing solid.

My main concern is that it has been removed and deleted from the car's ECU properly by someone who knew what they were at. Alot of horror stories about cowboys removing them and the car having all sorts of problems afterwards.

I be more concerned why DPF was deleted. Is there an engine issue being masked with DPF delete

Car could also have high mileage or could have been used for mostly short trips, many people buying diesel cars where they don't have proper use for them. Service history and mechanical inspection are important along with getting it scanned for fault codes.

Looking at trading up to an 2012 Fluence
(only thing I an afford really)

    I have a choice of 2:
    Tom Tom-125km
Irish Edition GT (basically the Tom Tom with a body kit) 131km

both 1.5 DCI automatics. (mileage is high, but both have full service history - fleet cars)

I'm stuck to a budget of 7-9k with my 2007 Nissan primera 1.8 auto petrol as a trade in). So the field was narrow in the 2011 - 2013 range.

Anything I should be worried about?

I have a mk3 Megane 1.5dci (the same as a Fluence underneath) with 134k km on it and it's perfect once they have been well serviced the mileage won't be an issue. They are generally quite reliable and the 1.5dci engine is one of the better modern Diesel engines. The only thing I wouldn't know much about is the auto gearbox in them. If I was picking between the two above I'd go tom tom as IMO the Irish edition body kit is terrible looking very tacky the standard looks better without it.The side skirts and lower lips on the front and back bumper do not suit it at all.

But overall I think it would make a good reliable car for relatively small money. As I said I've had no issues with my Megane Renaults these days are very different to what they were 15 years ago with all the electrical issues. So get the car well checked out and if all is good go for it.

The auto box on them is a dual clutch set up, it's quite good tbh.

Two things to have in mind:
    * Dry Dual-clutch gearbox - both DPS6 (aka 6DCT250 - Ford) and DSG7 (aka DQ200 - VW) are not famous for the reliability. Renaults come with EDC (aka Getrag 7DCT300 http://www.getrag.com/en/products/powershift/Dual_Clutch_Transmissions.html).
    * For long time Renault advertised 30kkm service intervals. I don't know if that's still the case - but be advised.

If I was looking for a automatic compact saloon, I would steer towards Focus 2.0TDCi Powershift...
