Car revs flying up

Can anyone shed some light for me please??

I have a 08 Peugeot 207, diesel, and I was driving home this evening from Dublin to Westmeath and the car seemed to begin over revving toward the end of my journey. I was behind a car and slowed down to let it turn off, as I brought the car back up thru the gears it was increasing in speed however the revs would fly up after 2000/2500. The car itself seems to be driving fine, as in it doesn't seem to have lost any power. It's due a service and goin in on Wednesday, however I have some driving to do this weekend!! Any clue what could be going on??

Clutch slipping? Is it happening when you accelerate, then drop back down before the car starts to pull away (not necessarily from stationary)?

I thought it mite have been clutch however I just took it out for a spin and it doesn't seem to be. It's onli happening between 4th & 5th gear over 70kmph. There's a whizzing noise coming from engine when car is stationary and accelerator is engaged which wasn't there before. It's very noticeable

Im sure you would have mentioned it, but have you any engine wanring lights illuminating as a consequence of this? There could be an issue with a coolant temp sensor or air mass meter, (these would affect the degree of fuel injection and a fault in either would result in your symptons). Ask your garage to investigate, most half places would add a small additonal charge to your service for a diagnostic plug in.
