Aeropress are the business if you want filter coffee.
If you want to get into making espressos, cappuccinos, etc to the same (and better) standards as your local coffee shop then a great entry level machine is the Gaggia Classic. They cost about €250 new which isnt cheap but if you match this with a decent grinder and good beans you'll be in coffee heaven.

I get the whole gag with buying quality coffee beans therefore needing to have a good grinder like this but can you buy high quality already ground coffee? Am i missing something? Excuse my ignorance. I have a nespresso, I think its lousy. The aeropress gets great reviews but I really like the look of the ease of use of that bialetti express. Do I need to buy this bargain grinder to ensure I give myself a good chance of making quality coffee with one of those bialetti pots? Again sorry probably a stupid question but I'm sick of poor coffee. Thanks.

No. The problem with ground coffee, is that it losses the flavour over time. Where as if you ground it and make a coffee immediately, the flavour is more intense. Its something to do with oxidation I think

I would go for the Aeropress. I dont think find the bialetti that amazing. I hate the cleaning up after using it. Plus the wait for the coffee to be ready, I imagine is equal with the aeropress

Personally, I've had most types of coffee makers at this stage in my life - filter, cafetiere, espresso maker, nespresso, gaggia. Many will have opinions on the merits of each, and each had their own good and bad points for me. But I have now settled on my Bialetti (express) Moka Pot. Is it perfect, no. But it does give me decent coffee every time, with little fuss and effort, and I can buy coffee for it in most shops. My Moka Pot and freshly ground Lavazza beans give me a great coffee, the pre-ground Lavazza gives me a good coffee.

Now, maybe this burr grinder will make my (non-burr) grind even better.......................

Once the beans are ground, they quickly lose a lot of their flavour.

Something like within the first 20 mins of grinding the beans maybe less, is the coffee at it's best tasting & freshest.

Then it goes as follows (rough guide):

- Freshly ground: brighter acidity, richest flavor.
- 9 hours: very similar to the freshly-ground coffee, although a bit mellower; less “bright” notes.
- 24 hours: some of the fruity flavors have faded; a bit less flavor in general.
- 7 days: duller, significantly less flavor overall.

I find the pre ground lavazza has too much fines for our bialetti you get quite a sludgy cup with it. I wonder will the fresh ground beands have similar amounts of fines.

Just my two cents on this...

For French press, aeropress, filter it's fine but imo it can't grind finely or consistently enough for a shot of espresso.

I bought it a few years ago and sold it quickly after and instead bought a gaggia mdf which is vastly superior and again imo the entry level to home espresso alongside a gaggia classic machine.

So yeah not for espresso but otherwise it's ok and for that price much better than a blade grinder.

No good for espresso.

It may say it will work for espresso but it won't. It can not grind fine enough.

For espresso you need to take a step up to at least a gaggia mdf.

As I said for the likes of a French press or aeropress etc it'll be a good step up for someone currently using a blade grinder or preground stuff.

Depends how many people are drinking coffe at the same time and also I like a good cup of coffee (e.g for a small espresso I use my Nespresso): i'd rather waste a bit of leftover than preparing a coffee 3 times in a row

Also the one you linked is from an unknown brand, from previous experience the final product won't be as good: buy cheap buy twice (have a look at the reviews)

I bought one of these about 2 years ago and couldn't get a grind fine enough for espresso. There is an easy hack which I followed and now I have the perfect espresso grind. The hack looks a little scary but it's worth it.

My K79 and Aeropress arrived today. First semi proper coffee setup apart from a Philips Senseo (another bargain alert ).

Awaiting Lavazza from Amazon. Bought some Robert Roberts beans while I wait.

No coffee expert, but happy with the two devices plus 1kg of beans and spare filters for around €72.

I have the same grinder, perhaps mine is a freak, but I've had to INCREASE the grind as the lowest setting basically pulverises the coffee and won't allow my machine to pump water through it's that fine :-)

Except for some minor design points I have no problem recommending this grinder, it's an animal for the money.

Mine arrived yesterday, tried it on the finest setting and it did a good job, not as fine as you would get in the finest ground lavazza for example but it did the job for me at the right price. So far so good.

It was £23.12 when I got it.

Some are ok. I tried Supervalu beans last night and they were decent.

I tried Tesco java beans before that and wasn't fond of them.

There's really nice beans in stores in Waterford not sure if you can get them elsewhere called Ponticelli Viking Roast.

So I just ordered this and when you select an Irish delivery address the prices drops to £22.13. If you select a UK delivery address (I tried my Parcel Motel) the price stays at £26.55. Weird!

Bought one of these. First use was fine, very pleased. Took it out this morning for the second time and it's totally dead. Following the instructions to a tee, but can't see what's wrong.

Anything obvious I should check before sending it back?

Deffo have the small lid on, and pushing down hard. Can hear good clicks from both compartments when assembled. Might try and change the fuse....

Is the burr loose at all (thing in middle of holder for beans)?
Take it out and set coarseness to, I think max, before putting back in and turning anti clockwise. This is how to make sure it's inserted correctly and grinder won't work unless that's done if it's loose.

This instruction is hidden in the maintenance section of manual and I had to do it after the first seemingly ok use.

Sadly, no. Have taken it out, cleaned it and reassembled it several times.

Delighted I took the advice on here and bought the Bialetti moka pot along with the grinder. I bought really good coffee beans from a new coffee shop in Celbridge. First cup I forgot to lower to 'fine' and made a pot/cup with coarse grind. Couldn't believe how good it tasted. Thanks OP and for others inputs on this thread.

I htink the holes in the bialetti are too large for fine grind anyway you just get a load of sludge in the bottom of your cup.
