Is there a type R or gti version of the new Mazda 3.

I was almost smoked up to 120km's on the ramp onto the motorway there last night.

It was mega quick. It looked lovely in white as well.

The diesel 3 is quite nippy by all accounts, you sure it wasn't a diesel as I don't think they sold any petrol current models here other than the 1.6 petrol which ain't quick.

It had 2 exhausts, and it was white, that's all I noticed. It got the jump on me from the sanding start, but I was still surprised how quick it got off the line.

    Probably a 2.2 diesel

Sounds like the SkyActive diesel as it has an exhaust at each side. Mazda don't put diesel badges on their cars either. The diesel is 2.2 litre and while on paper it only has 150bhp it is a light car and has plenty of torque, it also has a two stage turbo meaning there is nearly no turbo lag.

The 2.2 Mazda 3 is seriously nippy to drive - probably the GT version the OP was behind. Had a demo base model last year and biggest problem was getting the power on to the road.

If it's the one we put out last month (5dr GT in White), then it's an auto as well so no hesitation between gear changes.
