Fitted Wardrobes removal

I currently have fitting wardrobes in 2 bedrooms (they back on to each other). They would have been fitting during the building of the house in the 1980's.
I am looking to remove them and replace with free standing wardrobes.
Will I expect to find an exposed wall when I take them out or should the wall be dry lined? I'm basically trying to see if it would be less hassle to just get new wardrobes fitted.

Do they take up a whole wall? I pulled out fitted wardrobes in my apartment last year. Honestly with the standard of building nothing would have surprised me, so I didn't know what to expect. There was drywall up, but they'd stapled the flimsy plywood back of the wardrobes to the drywall, so I ended up having to re-plaster a whole pile of the wall because there were lumps gone out of it from the staples.

Thanks. If I knew what to expect it'd be easier to plan what I can do. It looks like I'll have to pull them out then decide what I need to do

Start by taking one out. Then, depending on what you find, decide on taking out the other.
