The Institute of Medicine recommends the average male take in 3.7 liters of fluid a day and women take in 2.7 liters of fluid a day. This is for the average male or female. Long distance runners will need to up these amounts based on their specific needs. You can use your urine color as a guide: your urine should be light yellow by lunch time and stay that way for the rest of the day.

This is the bit that most does my head in. I'd say the most I take is 1.5 to 2 litres of water EVER. That would be after a long run and on a warm day. 3.7 WTF????? And that's for average men.

My urine colour is light once I take a glass or so of water. Should I really try to drink that much water?? (I'd be in the loo most of the day too)

You also need to take in account food which has a percentage of water and drinks such as tea /coffee etc.. Most people when you take this into account reach the recommended liquid intake. Your urine colour is a good idea of whether you're getting enough liquid in.

Yeah, I know fruit and veg and so on count and I do take a good bit of veg at lunch almost everyday. A work colleague looked at my plate recently and said, 'lucky they don't charge ya by weight man'.

No, You Do Not Have to Drink 8 Glasses of Water a Day
Many people believe that the source of this myth was a 1945 Food and Nutrition Board recommendation that said people need about 2.5 liters of water a day. But they ignored the sentence that followed closely behind. It read, “Most of this quantity is contained in prepared foods.”

No, You Do Not Have to Drink 8 Glasses of Water a Day
If you are one of the ..."healthy adults in a temperate climate who may indulge in mild exercise, such as walking." As a runner, there is a need to replace lost fluids, whether that's through foodstuffs, or water. Not necessarily defined by arbitrary rules, such as 8 glasses of water a day, but enough to avoid dehydration.
