N10 - Roadside HGV/LGV survey cameras

The other day when I was approaching Kilkenny on the N10, I passed a set of cameras mounted on a temporary tripod on the side of the road connected to a waterproof carry case type thing at the base of the tripod. There was a sign just before them indicating they were "HGV/LGV Survey Cameras" or something along those lines.

The cameras looked like ANPR type or at least very much like the cameras you see mounted over traffic lanes in various spots such as near the weighbridge on the way into Dublin before Citywest.

At the same time directly across the road from them was a traffic guard either setting up a checkpoint or taking down his sign. I'm not sure if this was related or a very big coincidence. He did seem to be alone so not gearing up for a major HGV checkpoint (unless he was only getting things ready). If anyone knows the road they will know this a regular checkpoint spot.

Anyone have any idea what was going on here? I have never seen anything like it before. If it was just for the traffic corp doing a ANPR check on HGV/LGV why didn't they just use the cameras built into one of their cars rater than setup separate cameras on a tripod?

If they are what I think they are then I would think it is a traffic survey conducted by a 'consultant' for either a report or planning application. That is - they are non-official cameras used for doing some kind of survey.

The RSA have 2 ANPR cameras being evaluated atm. Your description sounds like one of them. Their ANPR camera are used against their NCT / CRVT database. RSA were probably there doing a joint checkpoint with the TC.

Yeah I was sort of thinking that myself as there was no Garda markings or anything like that on the sign. The TC guy on the far side of the road was probably just a coincidence, it's a very popular spot for checkpoints.

It was just basically two of these type cameras http://www.itsinternational.com/event-news/intertraffic-2012/high-performance-integrated-traffic-camera/ on a temporary tripod and cables running into a Peli-type waterproof case. I just didnt see the setup secured to anything to stop them been lifted so thats why I thought the TC guy might be looking after them but he looked to be packing up.

Actually now that i think about it there was one or possibly two cars parked up in a gateway up from them. I just didnt see anyone in them (ZZZzzzzzz yeah yeah I was watching them the whole time boss. I've no idea how they got stolen with me watching them :-) )

Yeah souds like the RSA cameras RSA have for HGVS. No wires or cables required - they send alerts for expired test certs wireless to operator's smartphone which has app. Used in conjunction with traffic corps.
