I have a 06 Vectra 1.6 petrol with 130000km on the clock. It needs a new timing belt and have it booked in for an early NCT to get a two year cert.

Im looking to get a new octavia and was wondering what you think might be the best option to get the most for the car?

Should i go with what a dealer is willing to give me for it or should i attempt a private sale? It needs a new timing belt and am willing to do this before private sale.

    Thanks for any advice.

Sell it privately. It won't be worth a whole lot though.

I have a 06 car as well, how do you get the 2 years nct cert. I thought once its over 10 years old you need to get it done every year.

I got a letter from the NCT center saying that the NCT is not due until January but if i got it tested before October it would get a 2 year cert.

Ah so if you get it done 3-4 months before it goes over the 10 year mark you get 2 years.

Yeah, it says recent changes in legislation makes it possible to have the car tested on a voluntary basis ahead of its due date.

The car is approaching its 10 year since its first registration. If it passes the test by 10/10/15 then it will be entitled to a 2 year cert from the date it passes. If you wait it will get a 1 year cert from its original due date.

I never knew this. Thanks a million. You have just saved me more hassle and one less nct to pass.

It's not going to be worth much by private sale or by trading it in. I'd save yourself the hassle and just trade it in. That way you don't have to worry about nct, timing belts, dealing with timewasters etc.

You probably might get more for it in a private sale, but I'd not bother myself. Get rid and enjoy your new car.
