Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge +

Right I couldn't find a dedicated thread for this device only one asking about prices on Vodafone and sim free prices, so I said I'd create one, if there is a dedicated thread that I missed then please link it here and I'll delete this one.

Anyway I received my S6 Edge+ on a three upgrade on Tuesday so this is my second full day with it.
And wow what can I say.
It is an absolute beast of a phone but also the best looking phone I've ever seen.
I came from an LG G Flex after being a Samsung whore for the previous 6 years.
I just needed a break from touchwiz and I really loved the LG G Flex especially the battery life, but now after my Samsung hiatus I'm back and wow the changes are huge, my last Samsung was a note 3 and touchwiz is hardly recognisable on this, it's so much lighter and stripped back, for example you have to download some of the camera modes.

And while I'm on the camera topic, it is spectacular, the detail, the low light shots everything is spot on, and if you're into photography there's even a pro mode where you can play with exposure, iso levels and white levels and so on.

Now performance is exceptional, 4 gig of ram like come on my last laptop didn't have that! You can literally throw anything at it and it will not stutter, I think when I clicked my open apps tab last night there was close 40 open and I clicked on any of them and they opened straight up, I know some people are complaining about aggressive ram management but in real world terms you won't notice and if they think this is aggressive then they have obviously never used an iPhone.

The edge oh the edge, this is a beautiful feature, while not very functional especially if like me you have a smart watch it is a sight to behold and it's different, it's a head Turner if anything.
Most reviews say why would you choose the edge+ over the Note 5 when it's €100 more and doesn't have a stylus?
Well unfortunately we don't have that choice in Ireland or in Europe so we don't face that dilemma and to be honest if I used my stylus once a week on the Note 3 it was a lot so the stylus wasn't an issue for me and the whole pricing issue isn't translating to us,
I paid €249 on three's €40.66 plan 24 month plan and AFAIK the normal edge was €379 on the same plan back in April on launch and the year old Note 4 is €209 on the same plan so I can't really understand this pricing but I'm not complaining.
Also once you put a case on the Note 5 no one will be able to tell if you're holding a Note 5 or a Note 4.

Now battery life, as I've mentioned it's only my second full day with it so I can't really compare battery life because as you know on your first few days with a new toy you don't put it down while trying to get used to it and messing with all the new features and gimmicks.

So there you go that's my experience so far and I'd like to hear other users opinions and I'll answer any questions I can for anyone interested in buying this phone.

I've been really interested in the Edge, mainly due to the way the screen looks and the reviews I've read about the battery, the camera,...

However I also saw videos where people were kind of complaining about the fact that the way the screen is formed may mean it's a bit less handy (ha!) to hold on to ? As in, danger of slipping out of your hand since it's only a small metal side that you have in your hand.

    Is it uncomfortable ?

These type of threads are great to read for me with an upgrade on the way, I was wondering about the edge or edge+, feel the edge plus may be too big for my tiny hands :o also I felt after holding it, it isn't hugely comfy in my hands and thinking you would have to put a case on it and then lose some of the features :(

Also the edge plus seems to just have a storage of 32gb which is probably fine as I survived on the S4 with less... Are you using a phone case?

When I played with it in the Samsung store, the camera is amazing. Really crystal clear & beautiful.

Absolutely not, I actually find it easier to hold than the Note 3, also there's no fear of activating any of the edge features accidentally because the edge tab can be moved anywhere on either side only takes up a tenth of the edge and has to be swiped inwards to activate it which you can't do by just touching it while holding it.
I have a spidgen neo hybrid arriving today and is going to kill me to cover this beauty but unfortunately my line of work demands a case.

That's great to hear, it was one of my worries about this.

Still a toss up between the Z5 and this one for me, I do like me some external memory options...

Ya I used to be one of those people complaining about the loss of expandable memory and removable batteries but I never once had a spare battery for any of my other phones or had a battery go belly up.

Also I found my old phones slowed down noticeably when trying to read data from the memory card even though it was a class 10 SanDisk ultra.

Google photos is so handy now to back up everything to the cloud and it also has the bonus of automatically creating gifs and stories from your photos.

I'm not an Apple fan but just look at how popular Iphones are which have never had removable storage, their users seem to manage.

IMO sd cards won't exist in 5 years and everything will be could based.

The Z5 premium on paper looks like the android to have right now but I've heard so many horror stories of Sony in the past not supporting their devices with software updates as long as other manufacturers do.

And is also your typical xperia a rectangular shiny slate with large top and bottom bezels.

But that's my view on Sony devices everyone to their own.

But apparently Android M will introduce the ability to 'merge' your internal and external storage, so no more moving apps to an external SD card to save storage :)

I think I'll head into a store to actually try and get a feel for both of the devices. I'm highly interested in the wireless charging though, no more messing about with charger cables (I'm on my third HTC cable now...).

For me the 32gb of storage is a serious put off tbh.. It's a toss up between this or the z5. I want to wait to see what it's actually like before making my decision.. Although its tempting to see if the note ever does come out here as if rather the s pen over the dual edge.. And it should be cheaper :pac:

I think I'll pick this up in the next week or two from 3. My Vodafone contract is about to end, and I'm sick of paying €75/month.

I'm an HTC fanboy, have had pretty much every HTC flagship back to before android existed. I do a lot of flashing/modding/theming. I've also has the galaxy S3 and Note 2. I really did like the screen size of the Note 2.

From what I can see, Touchwiz has been toned down, and I feel like I need a change. Even though I've only had my M9 for 6 months, it feels like a year and a half due to the M8 and M9 being so similar.

Expandable storage isn't much of a concern for me as I use play music, Spotify and other streaming services. I just hope the battery will last a fairly heavy day.

I look forward to hearing any general feedback owners of the device have.

Can only agree with the OP i have both the edge and edge plus, yes they are expensive but they look different and easy to hold,i would have liked a note 5 but as they are not on sale here yet i just went with the edge plus along with my edge..
They are nice and would suggest getting a case of some kind as the screen is more open to marks, battery on the standard edge is a bit poor but the edge plus seems better but then again im a power user so i tend to kill my battery rather quick no matter what i use...

Actually due an upgrade with three on my business plan, but is this a standard feature with the edge plus?

Edit, to clarify, does it come with all the relevant equipment?

No it doesn't come with the standard wireless charger or the fast wireless charger.

The standard wireless charger is reduced right down to £17 on Amazon at the moment but it states 4 hours to charge a regular s6 so I'm guessing around 5 hours for this.

I've seen the fast wireless charger for roughly €55 on a few sites but it's scarce and I wonder how these sites have them when it's on pre order on the Samsung site.

For me I don't see the point in a wireless charger, like in work I have a socket at my work bench and I can plug in my fast charger and use the phone while plugged in, you can't do that with wireless, the only slight benefit I can stretch to see is saving on wear and tear on the charging terminal.

The only places where wireless charging makes sense is coffee shops like Starbucks implementing it into their tables so you can throw your phone onto the table while have a flat white for a quick boost before moving on again.

    Thanks flange.

Was just having a quick look on the site, looks like I'm entitled to the handset for free on the business upgrade (€45pm)

Seriously considering popping in to a store today for one.

Sorry to be a pain, but Google isn't really answering these for me, can I just ask if the wireless charging relates to the handset specifically, or is.it in the charger itself.

Ie, will the current charger for my car be capable of fast charging the 6plus?

I currently use a 20w, 4.2A one like this, PowerGen Dual USB 4.2A 20W Car Charger for Apple iPad Air, mini, ... http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0088U4YAG/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_z9M8vbQEER1RK

    Thanks

I can't answer that one for you as I've only been using the fast charger that came with it but I can give you the output details from the charger,
    It's
    9v - 1.6A or 5v - 2A.
First time I've noticed two different output ranges on a single output charger, I reckon one output is if you use it on the US 110v system and the other if you use it on the European 220v system but I'm only guessing, there's definitely some jiggery-pokery going on inside the charger rather than just a simple step down transformer.

If I was due that upgrade I would bite their hand off!

Also take note if you're buying the Samsung fast wireless charger it doesn't include the actual fast charger just the pad, I've read a load of reviews with people complaining.

No it's not included, however according to reviews Samsung have made it so that you can pretty much use any brand of wireless chargers, so you can look for a cheaper option than the Samsung ones.

Both, although it would seem stores never actually received any yet.

Back in stock some time next week apparently.

Really? I was in a 3 store checking one out last weekend, and was showing interest. She made it sound like they had them in stock, was trying to get me to take one while it was on a discounted price.

100%. Originally I thought it was the standard edge, but thought it felt quite big in hand. I then held it up next to the S6 next to it to make sure my eyes weren't deceiving me. Also double checked in settings > about phone.

I was really surprised they didn't have it out on display somewhere more obvious....they still have the HTC M9 spinning in a display case at the front of the store.

Both stores I was in today (liffey valley and Naas) didn't have them, and the lady in the I Naas store said she didn't think they ever had any.

Not doubting you btw, just wondering how scarce they must be.

Meteor store in liffey Valley has one, they keep it our back, which is silly.

Just to follow up, went back past the 3 store today. Turns out they also have no stock (don't know if this was the case last weekend when I was there), they just have the display model.

The guy said stock levels are at orange, so there's limited store stock, and none in the warehouse. He couldn't tell me when they were getting some in.

Dam,also entitled to an upgrade on my personal account to, 68€ for the handset which they tell me it's a special one off offer, which I won't get online or in-store (according to the rep on the phone)

    No dam phones though.

Anybody know any info about carriers? I want to move from Meteor to either Vodafone or Three, as there's no sign of the Note 5 til next year I was going to settle on the Note 4 and spoke to a great sales rep in Liffey Valley Vodafone who offered me one with a discount and freebies, then when I went to the Three store I spotted the Edge Plus and I m kind of sold on it (it's the combination of s6 and large screen as its partly gonna be a work phone) but their sales rep was totally half arsed so I walked away feeling a bit meh about going with them. Basically I want an Edge Plus but with Vodafone, is there any word of them selling it?

My contract is about to end with Vodafone. I told them I was going to terminate, but would consider staying if they gave me the edge+ as an upgrade. They couldn't even say it was coming soon.

Am very close to joining you, had one in my hands today, (Liffey valley store) nice piece of kit.
The lad there said that they sold out with in one day.

I know I'm gonna miss the stylus though.

I honestly can't face buying the edge only to have the note 5 come out in a few months.

I just don't know if I can last that wait though haha.. The edge looks excellent but I need that stylus.. The edges are a complete gimmick but look great tbf

Like my upgrade is in a few weeks i used one these the other day and being honest i fell in love with it compare to my Note 4 or my fathers iPhone 6 +. Like i was thinking of going back to the iPhone but i cant see my self going back to it as the screen is smaller and the phone dosint really look that great. Also the big loss on the screen sharpness plays a major part in this losing a 100 + pixels per inch does add up big time.

With the fact it does not have stylus dosint really make me miss it as the only time i have ever took it out was do write down ideas for work and the likes but i can live with out that.

Any idea when will Vodafone have the phone in stock ?. As i more then likely will be wonting the 64GB one.

I'm a kiwi, and didn't even click that it might be Chch in NZ!

I also would have preferred the Note, but I didn't actually use the stylus much when I last had one (Note 2). I think they've improved it a lot since then, though.

In any case, if I decide I really want the Note when it comes out, should be able to sell the Edge+ and get not far off what the Note will be selling for.

Looking at it there 150 euro is not bad at all on the 60 euro a month deal with Spotify. As my upgrade is due on the 28th and i think i will be buying it.

Yeah, it's weighing up the international texts and minutes on Vodafone (which I will miss) vs unlimited data on 3.

Only thing i wish was they where selling the 64GB S6 edge + so i can have more music downloaded from Spoity

Haha, really? I dropped in past my local 3 yesterday while I was in the area. The guy who signed me up on my contract knew nothing. I assume my contract doesn't actually start until I receive the phone!

Would be strange to have such a delay, and I'm really surprised that those shops could give you that kind of answer. Normally they don't even know what is coming in the next delivery.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 647 ✭✭✭Am I Evil?

That's what I'm hoping. Didn't realise it would be so difficult to give someone 800euro

I was told the phone being up for sale on the three website was just pre release stock. Which sort of goes in line with that three told me online when I asked, which was the phone is yet to release on the network. Bit strange to say the least, a joke really. It's just too expensive sim free online otherwise I'd have placed my order by now :o

Really weird of them to not release the Note 5 in Europe and push the Edge+, only to have no stock.

If the battery life of the Moto x style was any better I'd be all over that now.. There's nothing much out at the minute.

Ilk give this another few weeks and see how it plays out.. Otherwise I'll have to go for something else

Absolute madness.. Three had it for 750 just two weeks back.

But honestly looking at the prices in other parts of the world I can't see it coming back at that price.. It will definitely be 800 minimum. Gah there's nothing else out that grabs me
