I'm a number of weeks before my 9 months on Jobseeker's Benefit, after a redundancy, runs out. I still haven't got a job. What happens now? Do I inform Social Protection or do they contact me? I'm a real greenhorn in this area and up to Jan 2015 have worked for the same company for 31 years. I applied to do a 2 year course (vtos) but have been told it's full and can't really do anything other than that I was trained to do but jobs in this area are virtually impossible - especially now I'm 53. My partner is self employed and is really suffering with the business and practically working for nothing. Amateur 'experts' are telling me I will be cut off because my partner - despite a tiny income (in fact they would receive more on the dole) - is self employed. Is this the case? I'm starting to get really concerned now. Any help appreciated.

Call into your local office and ask them what you need to do.

What happens is that you should at this stage have gotten forms out in the post to apply for jobseekers allowance which is a means tested payment. As your partner is self employed then your case will have to go to a social welfare inspector. Any capital you have over €20,000 is also assessed. If you received a large redundancy package then you will have to show how this was spent. If you havent received anything out in the post my advice to you is to call into your local office and enquire about jobseekers allowance after your benefit is exhausted.
