    Hi
Can anyone recommend a decent tyre for a road bike which is less than €50. I have a Avanti Giro 3 Road bike and was looking at some on Wiggle but I cannot make a decision.
    thanks

Conti gp4000 sII .... roll well, grippy, light, durable. Done about 2500km in them commuting through Dublin city and the odd sportif, they hold up well and surprising no punctures yet (except for 1 pinch flat which was my fault)

You'll not get two of them for €50 though.

I'd recommend Michelin Pro4 Service Course tyres, you should be able to pick two up for €70 with a pair of free tubes thrown in too. Excellent puncture resistance and a good fast grippy tyre.

Is p&p not €7.95 to Ireland?

Ah so it is, I never changed the country when i looked. Still compared with all the usual suspects, still sits 15-20+ euro cheaper.

Obviously not what the OP is looking for :P

Lads Im a bit new to all of this so Im a little confused on the size and also if I am adding some tubes to the purchase what is the difference with the sizing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24 FMmurt

this is what came with the original :

TYRES: KENDA KADENCE PRC2 700 X 23C FOLDING WITH SUPERLITE TUBES

so I was lookig for direction on which Grand Prix 4000 S II tyres to purchase?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,235 ✭✭✭✭Cee-Jay-Cee

Get 700x 23 or 700x 25 (25 are wider and more comfortable) You'll need tube size 18-23 or 20-25 so long as your tyre size is within the tube size they'll be ok.

Pretty sure it's only aesthetics that differ between the two, i.e. reflective material vs non reflective material

yeah 700 x 23mm or 25mm ... 25mm will be slightly larger and more comfy. if there is any doubt or concern that the wheel rim won't take a 25mm then get 23mm.

A guy on Adverts (not me) selling a pair of Vittoria Diamante's for about €40.
Great tyre. The level entry of the their cotton tyres.

If you don't want to shell out for the 4000s why not go for just plain Grand Prix's? I've no idea what you're looking for in terms of racing, commuting, general usage etc... I've got these tyres on a bike and grip wise and rolling they are fantastic for the money.

Maybe another poster can correct me. I think the 622 is the same as 700 ?

    http://www.bike-discount.de/en/buy/continental-grand-prix-23-622-mm-black-72213/wg_id-2046

for example this says 622 and the details say Dimension: 700 x 23C

what about the Michelin Lithiums you recommended yesterday?

    Yep.

The 4000s are different to the original 4000 version but the 4000s II's are the same as the 4000s, technically.

The "II's" came in when they started offering different colours, from what I can recall.

Bargains vary depending on stock levels, new models etc.

Best one by far at the moment that I have seen when it comes to race quality tyres is:

    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/ie/en/michelin-pro-3-race-road-tyre-black-free-tube/rp-prod122109

Bought 1 a couple of weeks ago, used it racing in Charleville last weekend and very happy with it (obviously can't say much for longevity yet). Just ordered 2 more.

Put it in the same ball park as Conti GP4000's and Schwalbe Ultremos which have used quite a bit.

thanks for that. seems like a decent purchase.
