Im looking for a bit of advice, I have asked previously about diesels, however I'm starting to consider a petrol!

    I used to have a 08 Avensis diesel, I spent €30-40/wk max on fuel!! I average 8k km/year!

Work is only 5km away, I drive little to nothing at weekends, maybe one long drive a month

I have €7-8000 to spend, if I was going to go petrol what would you recommend
(I would like something a bit better than poverty spec and economical i.e. fuel at €30-40/wk!!)

Well in budget, reliable and brisk enough.

They are fairly decent on juice too I believe.

Cars gone she was wrote off, I'd imagine it was costing me €30/wk if you count the fact I'd go home for lunch so that's there and back twice, 20k, plus tipping around in the evening, not exactly what a 2.0d was designed for!!

Worst possible driving for diesel as they are not even slightly economical when the engine is cold and yours seemed to be cold a lot of the time you'd want to drive 10 km before they start to properly warm up. Diesels like to be started up and then driven 100km plus with the odd short trip inbetween not all short trips.

Anyway it's not a bad thing for you as petrol cars are cheaper to buy and often cheaper to maintain. The 1.8 petrol civic is quiet economical there are a few posters on here with them you'd pick up a clean decent spec one well within your budget.

OP, your mileage is very low so you don't need a diesel car.

    What about a Passat:

It's a turbocharged petrol so will have more than adequate power it's the 1.6fsi you want to avoid in them as they are slow. I think that Passat is 122bhp but maybe more there was a few variants of that tsi engine.

Does anyone here drive an Auris petrol?

    https://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/toyota-auris-1-6l-vvt-i-t3-5dr/9361594

I like the above model, but could go for the 1.4 ptl if it's more reliable!

If your spending your own money I would go for the auris average economy but reliable as fek drove one myself for 3 years not a bother... A great car to own.

Did you have the 1.4 or the 1.6?

Go for the 1.4 vvti if getting the auris. Get a pre July 2008 example as this will be on the cc based tax system so annual tax will be €385 as opposed to €570 for a 1.4 vvti auris registered post June 2008 that's on emmisions based tax.

I had the 1.4 Johnboy mentioned above 385 tax per anum. Got a good trad in for it as well 7.5k for a 2008 probably would have got more privately.
