Check cat light on Volkswagen

So, a fiend of mine bought a new (used) VW with a 1.4 TSi 160hp 2012. Got it home after diving 50 ish km and the cat light came on.

Will be calling them first thing Monday, simi garage + warranty etc, but was wondering if this could be a symptom of something sinister? what are the right questions to ask?

Are there innocent reasons this would happen?

Do you mean the MIL, a.k.a. the "Check Engine" light?

He doesn't, I think - yellow engine light, manual says 'cat conv fault'

Right, well obviously it has a downstrean O2. I suppose it's either that or the cat, see what garage diags say.

    It's this one:

Will have to see what the garage says.

That's the "Check Engine" light. Every car has one, and a good assortment of things can flip it on.

From what the rest of the internet says, it's not a general 'check engine', it's specific to the emission control system.

So, the dealer said "it happens sometimes when they've had a car idle on the forecourt for a while.. take it for a drive and it should go away". It did.

    mmm.

Volkswagen call it the "engine is on" light

Don't be believing what the rest of the internet tells you at all.

I know exactly what it is. :)

If the car is been driven a lot with low petrol , especially if the yellow light is consistently on , this can cause a cat conv fault .

Is she not sucking the juice from the same spot all the time regardless of how much is in the tank?

My apologies, I wasn't trying to be smart and I appreciate the help. It's hard to gauge who is genuine and who is taking the mick in this forum sometime.

That's alright. That amber light is commonly known as the "Check Engine" light, and it's official monicker is the Maintenence Indicator Lamp. It is set when a monitored fault condition occurs in the engine management system and it is true that it is largely concerned with emissions control, but to say it means a "Cat conv" issue specifically is at best highly misleading and I expect that's what VW tell civilians. :)

That system monitors a whole clatter of stuff - have a Google for OBD-Ii core powertrain DTCs" to get a flavour.

Petrol VAG with an EML on? First guess would be either a coil has gone or is about to go.

Not sure if its common on the 1.4T, but it's very common on the older petrol engines.

Can happen at any time and is a cheap and easy fix, so hopefully it's just that.
