    Disc brake failure ?
have hydraulic shimano disc brakes on the hybrid/mtb and back brake failed this morning..front still ok
lever has been softening over the last 2-3 wks
is this likely a pad worn to useless (no squeaking) or need bleeding refilling with mineral fluid ?
if its a fluid prob is it diff to do myself ?
(bike 2 1/2 yrs old, never been bled)
    cheers

2.5 years old, I'd say your pads are on the way out. the system will need to be bled when pads are being changed.

You can change the pads without bleeding the system.

Here's a video on replacing disc pads.

found a little rubber cap hanging off the caliper...reattached and brakes seem to work now...but squeeky hadn't time to take it out on the road yet

    on the subject of brakes...
also my old beater racer (Syncrony alu (aero)frame ) tektro brakes looks like the pad is part of the block, no grubber screw for slide in pad type
presume block/pad is a single unit ? block has a wing

Yes block is a single unit. The Tektro one, that you've linked to should be fine.
Or you could replace your unit with something like this. You can replace both sets of pads for €12 and have two spare sets of replacement pads.
I have used these ones without any problems.

If that's the "little rubber cap" that covers the fluid bleed valve then it has absolutely no impact on the functioning of the brakes ... that hasn't caused your problem! After 2.5 years it's likely to be worn pads, brakes need bleeding or even a burst internal seal! Replacing pads is a relatively easy job but might be worth getting a shop to do it unless you are a reasonably competent mechanic ... Not a good place to have a sudden failure!
