Travel Insurance

My wife and I are planning a trip to New Zealand next January/February. Our trip will take just over five weeks in total and will include two days stopover in Singapore on the way out and three days in Sydney on the way back.

We currently have an annual multi trip policy, but it only covers us for up to a maximum of 30 days on a single trip (out of 90 days overall per annum). And our current policy expires midway through our planned trip to New Zealand in any event.

We are booking our flights through Trailfinders and they have quoted a premium of €219 for the two of us for an annual policy. This policy includes winter sports and travel to the U.S., neither of which we require. We can get a 25% discount if we don't need medical insurance.

We have worldwide medical insurance cover under our VHI policy, but I'm not sure what the upper limit is on this cover and my understanding (please correct me if I'm wrong) is that most travel insurance policies that dovetail with private medical insurance will provide a higher overall limit, with the primary medical insurer providing cover up to their normal limits and the travel insurance covering any excess up to their limit.

The rate we have been quoted seems quite high, and provides cover we don't need while not appearing to integrate with our medical insurance in a practical manner. I'm looking for any suggestions as to a better alternative. We asked Trailfinders about a single trip policy and this would be more expensive than the annual policy.

By the way, €219 is not a huge amount in the context of the overall cost of the trip and I don't want to skimp on cover, so I'm happy to pay this amount if there is no better value alternative out there.

I travel a lot and always use the premium option with the AA Annual multi-trip. Deffo go for the best package as it covers everything including excess which you will have to pay if you need to claim.

Should be approx. 100 a year as I have a family policy with them 2 adults and 2 children for 133euro.

Good luck with your trip and enjoy every second.

Getcover.ie allow extended trips for a small increase in premium. My current annual policy allows for a single trip of up to 90 days.

There are others also but i happen to be insured with them at the moment.
