Was Satan actually the "Good Guy"?

Was he just trying trying to save mankind from oppression and ignorance ? He understood Human nature and told them the truth .. God is the one committing the most evil acts in the bible, including genocide. Satan didn't seek worship and obedience or else the possibility of eternal damnation. Did he not just want people to use their free will? and not get beat up with guilt and anxiety...

Was he the good guy? A watchful protector, a Dark Knight.... What did he do that was so demonic and bad? Did we back the wrong horse ?

What are the most damning, burn in hell, accusations that can be put against Satan...

    edit

In a 2011 survey 30% of Americans, The most powerful and influential nation on earth, believe that all the word of the bible is literally true and the word of God. That means that they don't believe the earth is more than 6000 years old and that they believe that the earth is flat etc.

    http://www.gallup.com/poll/148427/say-bible-literally.aspx
"PRINCETON, NJ -- Three in 10 Americans interpret the Bible literally, saying it is the actual word of God. That is similar to what Gallup has measured over the last two decades, but down from the 1970s and 1980s. A 49% plurality of Americans say the Bible is the inspired word of God but that it should not be taken literally, consistently the most common view in Gallup's nearly 40-year history of this question. Another 17% consider the Bible an ancient book of stories recorded by man."

Even if you take the Bible as literally true , what bad stuff did Satan do ?

You forget it was a power struggle between God and Satan as described by the prophet Ezekiel, Satan was getting above his station and seeing himself as being better than God.
So Pride came before the fall....all the way from heaven to hell, quite the fall.

Not being real I have no Idea one may need to consult the Author of that book.

A power struggle between an omnipotent lord and his slave who wished to bow and sing praises no longer. Satan never sought to rule or surplant God, he only wished to be free.

The Biblical God killed, literally, millions if we're to believe the stories. Satan, possibly, killed the family of Job - with God's permission. That's the only damage he ever did. God drowned the population of the Earth, burned cities (while sparing a man who offered his daughters up to a rape-gang, and later had sex with his own daughters - shows how warped his sense of right and wrong is), and directly ordered the slaughter of countless other tribes at the hands of his chosen people.

Absolute psycho, can you blame Lucifer for wanting to get out under his boot?

The line from the Bible is "Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall".

    But anyway, Satan was misunderstood...

God and the devil are both man-made creations representing the good and evil of human nature.

    Or something like that.

Satan essentially represents the intolerance of the monotheistic Abrahamic religions towards alternative belief systems, particularly those of a polytheistic & pantheistic nature. Previous great empires such as the Greeks, Romans, Egyptians etc, once they had conquered an area, generally did their best to integrate local beliefs into their own system so as to enable a religious modus vivendi. With the Abrahamic faiths however, there was only absolute Good & absolute Evil, the latter being represented by Satan, into whom all the "sins" of competing faiths could be poured. A seriously aggressive & uncompromising approach to faith & Man's place in the world.

I recommend the novel Horns by Joe Hill, which touches on the idea if the devil as hero. The film was good too.

Because no-one tries to rule a country based on rules of star wars or doesn't allow children into schools because they're trekies and not fans of star wars, or worse, not fans of sci fi at all!

You realise Satan was just the old-timers' version of the boogie man?

"Behave yourself or Satan will get his hands on your soul."

If there is a God, he must be fairly pissed off by all the cool songs written about Satan.
    And what does God get?

Oddly enough, that notion about the false verses is actually an Islamic one. Poor aul Salman had no notion he was going to end up on the run.

In eastern philosophy they view the world in two separate ideas.
The first is the idea of divided, discrete, changing, finite, subjective and multiplicity of existence.
This is the equivalent of the Judaeo-christian Satan. Who rebelled against unity and wanted existence and identity in its own right.
This is a rebellion against the other idea of unified, objective and infinite merged existence. But everything will return to unity – as the alternative is always degrading and destructive.

For the devil can take many forms.

As is evidenced by the fact that Satan was given the physical attributes of the pagan god Pan.

The Romans didn't care what religion you were as long as you paid lip-service to the Roman pantheon. Their beef with Christians was because Christians refused to do this, and because they were general troublemakers.

    Mod: Guys,
A year or more ago we started directing people to post threads about religion in the relevant religious forums. For a while, there were very few threads about religion in After Hours and it was a better forum for it.

The forum is suffering once again and reverting back to a nasty negative forum which none of us want (and if that's how you do want it then we're sorry but tough titty :P) so we will be making a concerted effort to improve After Hours over the next while.

Please post threads about religion, within the relevant religious forum, please ensure that you have read their charter before doing so and that your thread or post does not breach their rules.

    Thank you.
