Differences between being married and not married

I am in a male-female partnership and we live together. He says he wants to spend the rest of his life with me and wants to have children with me which we are considering doing asap (he is 100% happy with this). We are currently renting but plan to buy somewhere in the coming year.

The problem I have is that he doesn't believe in marriage and doesn't ever want to marry. I would of course really like to marry but leaving that aside I am worried about where I stand (and possible future children) as just a co-habiting couple - that is legally, tax wise, the status of children etc. He thinks there is no major difference and I can't convince him that I find it very worrying being in such a tenuous (as I see it) situation.

Can anybody give me a comparison in a simple way of exactly what the differences are. I know that there are a lot of sites that I can go digging on but I would just like the basics to get started. Even if someone can point me to a site that does it simply that would be great.

    Thanks in advance.

    Mod Note
Sorry OP but per our charter PI/RI cannot give you legal or financial advice.
We can give you advise in regards to your relationship to help you think through how to handle differing opinions but as above we can't allow threads just looking for that advice. If you are just looking for that type of information then google is your friend.

    Sorry
