Hi, when you see this sign on a farmers land does this mean hunters are welcome and will be shooting on this land or is it saying that the land is preserved like a wildlife reserve, as in no hunters allowed?

it mean preserved for members only... unless you have been given permission to hunt the same land by the farmer... nobody invites randomers onto there land to hunt

Preserve means no shooting on said land! The signs are to indicate to the gun Club in that area in question that the land CANNOT Be shot, it is preserved for game to reside, undisturbed. Some farmers /landowners like to have wild birds have an area of sanctuary. Hence you might also see the signs saying" sanctuary "this may be an area close to pheasant pens or release areas

Thats 2 completely different answers then! I cant decide how to read it:

    Ballyexample Gun Club Lands Preserved

Is it saying Lands preserved for use of Ballyexample Gun Club only?

or is it saying, feck off Ballyexample Gun Club, these lands are preserved, no shooting?

Preserve is shooting for named gun club (unless given permission by land owner) sanctuary is no shooting

Down here in our gun Club, I'm on the committee, preserve means" no shooting"end of for gun Club members, now if you were to obtain permission from the landowner well in good but as a gun club member you cannot shoot it Under club membership

Its a gun club sign on a farmers land, its a couple of fields along a lovely salt water inlet down in Clare with loads of rushes that are used by water hens, swans, signets, ducks etc that I always did a quick lap of it in passing because you always see something interesting even though its clearly private land its the middle of nowhere. but its also definitely working farmland because theres a ruined house there that has been converted into a cattle crush. Fair play to him though he has put up excellent fencing to keep the waters edge and the rush habitat pristine.

This sign has appeared on the side of the ruined house this year though and Im wondering if its to encourage or discourage hunting there, its a proper habitat like a mini-nature reserve and I hope its being left alone.

To me it's one of two things:
    1. If the land owner has placed the sign then it's no shooting for anyone.
    2. If the gun club (as in this case) has attached their name to it then it's for members of that club ONLY.

Members of my club know which lands are sanctuaries and we have them clearly marked as such so as to avoid this sort of confusion.

It means the members of the club have exclusive rights to hunt there. Normally, these signs are only erected with the landowners permission (be silly & bad manners to do it without getting permission!) so I'd be surprised if non club members would be allowed in.
