'08 1.5 Laguna MAF Sensor - Can it be cleaned ?

    Hi all,

Wife's Laguna, diesel 1.5. Started yesterday morning to hunt on the idle. No warning lights on dash. Plenty of fuel left and no problems since filling up 500km earlier.

Local mechanic had a quick look and poked around under bonnet. Did something right as it started running smoothly. I drove it for a coupe of miles to test, no probs.

Soon as we started it up again, same thing and lots of smoke. His diagnostic kit couldn't recognise the car.

Took a chance and brought it to dealer today. They told wife the flap on the MAF is stuck. 485 euro to fix incl. 65ish for diagnostics today. A private garage will do it for 100ish less.

I know there were MAF sensors using a flap but all the Google images I can find of Renault are the hot wire type. Think they're chancing it ?

Anyway - my question is -

Can I just remove the MAF and give it a squirt of contact cleaner, and replace, or is there a load of laptop bull**** that rules out any attempt at a quick fix ?

    Thanks in advance.

maybe ? go out and have a look at it to know for sure ( take the hose off and/or get the part number off it )

small chance it could be fuel pressure regulator - if its not keeping accurate control it'd be noticeable at idle n stuff

    Oooooh. I forgot.

You could see a constant stream of bubbles in the diesel line. Sounds relevant to fuel pressure regulation ? What do you think ?

I don't mind trying to clean the MAF, but I know nothing about cars and I don't know am I going to screw up a load of other stuff ? Will I need to clear fault codes etc etc ?

Can't look at it now. It's still in the stealership.

    Thanks for replying !

bad idea so - whatever about the "other stuff" because of the high pressures the fuel can just go straight through your skin :

Well I wouldn't touch anything fuel-related anyway. You just gave me one more reason !

I thought the MAF was just unplug and unscrew out of an air line. It's the unplug bit I'd have been worried about.

Wha do you think about the air bubbles in the diesel line ? Pressure regulator issue ? I just want to be able to tell the mechanic as much as poss. ?

The bits where you can see bubbles are not the high pressure bits.

Also the Mass Airflow Meter is on the Air Intake not the fuel.

OP, follow that clear plastic pipe with the bubbles in it, sometimes if its not seated in all of the clips it can cause air to get into the line.
