I may have a new job on the horizon, an excellent one that would seriously set me up for life..

I'm 6 years in my current place of employment, contract states after 2 years of service 1 month notice is required.

Should I be successful in getting the job, I am going to ask/tell??? my boss that I will be doing 2 weeks instead.

My role is admin, so it's not like it will be too difficult to find a replacement.

Has anyone ever done this before? I'm a little worried but tbh I am willing to do whatever it takes to get this new job. They have said they need me to give 2 weeks notice!

    Have you holidays to take?

I have 5 days for Christmas? Would that count?

Probably not. Have you taken all of the holidays you are due so far this year?

Hmm then it's quite possible your employer may want you to work your full notice period.

Your new employer shouldn't have a problem with having to give a months notice, almost minimum standard these days no? I've heard of people having to give twice that.

The new job require someone to start in two weeks due to the nature of their business.

I would be mental to let it go, it's a huge increase in salary and honestly a massive opportunity for me. Whereas where I am now have really just made me completely miserable for the last 6 years, no payrises, no chance of progression, a dead end basically. A chance like this doesn't happen very often so I'm stressed out so bad! Just had my second interview and there is a really high chance I'm getting this job!

you could speak to your hr manager and explain that you can only give 2 weeks notice, they might be okay about it

Thanks IvoryTower, the unfortunate thing is, there is no HR here :( just the 2 bosses who own the company, so I'll have to go through them. I've been a model employee since I started, never any problems, always have my work done. I've never been late in 6 years, I'm going to create a document which will explain how to do everything I currently do so if they do have to get a new staff member on short notice, they will every piece of information possibly needed to help them do the work. I wouldn't leave them in the lurch but I just cannot pass this opportunity up, I would regret it for life!!

Speak to your boss so, it sounds like the would have to be quite unreasonable to kick up a fuss over it. A person can be hired to do admin work very easily.

It sounds like you have been an excellent employee, so the bosses whilst sad to see you go will probably be reasonable, particularly if you document procedures for handover.
It is very unreasonable for the new job to expect a start in 2 weeks though, that is very difficult for anyone in employment. It would ring alarm bells for me. Tread carefully.

Hi all sorry took so long to update. Turns out I'm an idiot :D my job has to give ME a months notice and I only have to give them 2 weeks! I don't know how I managed to confuse that but there you go!

Got the job! I am ecstatic. I have been waiting for an opportunity like this for 6 YEARS!! I cant even tell you all how happy I am, spent all morning crying with sheer happiness :D:D

Thread can be closed if Mods like :)

Have a great weekend everyone :)

Ps.. I handed in my notice and everyone is devastated but I will be doing back flips out of this place when I finish up in two weeks :D:D:D
