Just after buying a 2004 car last week. Turns out that the car is after using 3 litres of engine oil in a week! The car is leaking the mechanic doesnt think its possible to leak 3 litres. Was talking to mechanic on the phone and he reckons the car is burning the oil aswell. Says piston rings will have to be replaced. How much will this set me back? Or would i be better off trying to sell it?

Does car smoke at all upon startup or during driving?
Is there any oil around the engine to signify a leak?

Do you know it was full when you bought it?
    What mileage have you done?

3 litres is crazy. If it's being burnt there is no doubt you'd see it.

If it's leaking it'd be easily identifiable on the engine.

Did you buy it private or from a dealer?

The ground outside the house is deatroyed with oil. It was with the mechanic last week where it was topped up. I dipped it over the weekend and there was hardly a drop of oil in it! No smoke when driving. Slight bit of white smoke when starting the car is all

get a torch and find out where its coming for a start, you shoudent be driving it on the road in that condition, dripping oil onto the roafd can kill another road users, cyclist, motorbikes etc
