How to handle an offer

I've gotten an offer for a job (I wasn't really looking to move but threw my name in with applying to this job) the title was head of mobile. i'd be leading a team of mobile developers.

I didn't get the head of mobile job but they are offering me a mobile developer role for £35k (it's a UK company). they'd want me to work in Belfast in the initial few months (all travel and hotel expenses paid) and then work from home but my problem is the role is the same as what I'm doing now in Dublin and it's (with current exchange rates) only €3k more.

I was really looking at a ballpark off €55-60k for the role but I think I want to decline as £35k is really a bit too low from what I could get in Dublin.

How should I reply but without sounding like I'm not an asshole.

I would simply decline the offer and thank them for the opportunity.

If the push for a reason then I would explain that the role you applied for was of interest to you but this alternative one is not.

Ah see there's a thing I left out of the OP. They ask me if I would be interested in the lesser role to which I said yes I would. Doing that I expected that the pay would be more in line with what I was expecting.

Just be up front. Say that the pay is lower than you would be interested in.

They may make a counter offer but if not then so be it.

Just say the pay would not make it worth your while leaving.
