Russels, The Bar Tender or the Phoenix are decent pubs with cosy atmosphere, nice crowds and no distractions like too-loud music or TVs in every corner.

The selection of drinks in the Bar Tender is a particular highlight if you're into that.

Note they can all get very busy just like any high-street pub but compared to the other places awash with either TVs, thumping music or scumbags they would be my pick.

If it's dinner and drinks you're after look no further than the Windsor. Food is top notch and it's an older, more relaxed crowd in the lounge, so again, good for conversation.

For a date Russells. Nice environment and no blasting music

    +1 for Windsor also

I've found Russells unbearably hot so be warned and dress accordingly.

The Market Bar does lovely tapas and has a good atmosphere.
