Don't expect to see much reason and rationalism in India. It's largely a superstitious hole.

At the risk of labelling a whole country.....but India is seriously such a cesspit. The endemic misogyny there is disgusting.

Why are they so into rape? Must be a cultural thing, I just don't understand it.

    No harm in that imo

Sure when your one Savita died here, Indian politicians were calling for the Irish government to be pursued on murder charges, and dragged in front of the UN Human Rights court.

Let's see if any of those knobs do the same here. Of course not, it'll be swept under the carpet like most other problems in India

Yet countries clamour to do business with them due to cheap labour just like china...

India is possibly the worst country in the world.

I think that's because she would have been considered middle class due to being in the west, Not like the poor unfortunates from the wrong class actually in India.

It's an absolute shithole of a country on so many levels. How depressing it that all Amnesty International can do is to ask people to sign a petition to stop it?

Unelected councils like that aren't even legal but yet the state and its agencies turn a blind eye to it.

To clarify. This is a local illegal kangaroo court that has made this ruling. The "judges" will likely be imprisoned now that it has come to light.

Sentenced to Rape? Jesus how does this 'village council' law override the law of the land, Where the hell are the police? Surely the state can send in people to deal with this issue.

Now that it has come to light? Are you really naive enough to think that authorities were not already aware that this 'council' existed, like the thousands of other ones that do across India?

Do you suggest that they all be pre-emptively imprisoned? What should the state do before it comes to light?

    Probably on the council.

Before what comes to light? The existence of such councils is illegal, the state knows they exist and where they exist and choose not to deal with it

If you are reading about this in Ireland, then I am sure that the local authorities are long since aware too.
Amnesty International has highlighted the plight of the girls, and is asking people to sign a petition to demand that the local authorities intervene.

So who gets to administer the sentence, is it a 'free for all', does it have to be witnessed? Sick.

Rural india must be one of the worst places in the world to grow up a woman, if you weren't killed at birth in the first place of course

No all of them should be pre-emptively disbanded all across India. Just like Religious courts in the west for example. They should have no power and not be seen as legitimate or carry any sway above the laws of a country.

Sick old fcuks get to have sex with girls under the banner of justice. These cultures make me sick.

Oh give over with the hyperbole. The two are utterly incomparable.

There are many countries with human rights abuses similar to those suffered by women in India, sadly.

Don't judge a billion plus people on the actions of some medieval village council, it doesn't represent the culture or attitudes of the majority.

Some vile stuff going on right enough. However it just reminds me of the Catholic Church really. The main difference was they tried to hide it whereas in India they are more open about their sick monstrous ways.

Its easy to cast opinions on others cultures but perhaps we should be looking much closer to home and wondering how it is still accepted that we teach children about religion. Its just as big a clusterfcuk when you think about it.

Whole family is shamed, the "guilty party" hasn't been dealt with by them, so they humiliate them by raping the women. Mass sexual assaults on lower caste women are quite common if the caste in question starts refusing to bend the knee or avoiding their "obligations"....Were they higher caste you can be guaranteed something other would have been ordained as punishment.

I would try and do my homework but Ive been locked in this confession booth at the hands of a sex deprived Priest who is intent on tampering with me and then covering it up. Standard really.

Feminism forget about a scientist wearing a shirt with women on it. This is your real enemy. Although there doesn't seem to be the same response to this as the Tim Hunt witch hunt.

India's caste system and treatment of women needs a major overhaul!

No calls to militarily intervene in that country to sort out the locals.

They should have the same punishment bestowed on them by a gaggle of hardened prisoners, maybe then other kangaroo courts will think twice about such barbaric behaviour. They're worse than animals.

Pathetic response. These girls and many others in developing countries are being subjected to the same thing every day. Yet what do we more of? A scientist wearing a f-ing t-shirt. Absolutely criminal.

Actually they could do a lot to raise awareness. Political pressure can be just as effective.

I'm not comparing like for like exactly but you reminded me of the Magdalene laundries. Two people have sex and only the mother is punished by being locked up in a hellhole.

Get a life. Those sisters need simple law enforcement measures to protect them not a platoon of special-op feminists parachuted in.

So we've had axe-grinding about America and feminists so far.. Muslims next? Immigration perhaps? Fucking unbelievable.

And do you think using any opportunity to take a pop at feminism is going to do anything to help these girls and many others who are subjected to the same thing every day?

How about you address the people who are actually responsible for these atrocities and unlawful "councils" -
Amnesty International said in its appeal that these kind of unelected village councils are widespread in parts of India.

"More often than not they are made up of older men from dominant castes, who prescribe rules for social behaviour and interaction in villages," said the group.

Much as I have very little time for Amnesty International, I'm not going to take a pop at either them, or feminists for not doing anything about this.

It would have been equally dumb if I'd said "forget about fathers rights, sort this out first", so I won't, because that would be dumb. Ffs not everything has to be made into a political gender war, can we not just see issues as humanitarian issues, to be tackled by everyone, regardless of their gender or politics?
