Car Hire (USA Address)

    Hi,

I was told that people from america get much better price on car hire, so tried it out. I'm going to France next week, hiring a car for 4 days comes to about €100, I put in then that my home country is america and it's €50.

I know a guy who hired a car like this but then was not sure if he was properly insured.

Any opinions why we are being ripped off, or if any danger to this? I've family in America so I could easily use their address if necessary.

It could be due to insurance. I'm renting a car in Ireland this week. When I looked at the price through the American website, insurance wasn't quoted. When I compared the price to the Irish website the car rental was the same, but the Irish website factored in the insurance which made it more expensive.

My very foggy understanding is, and I might be wrong here, when you pay with certain credit cards from the US then Collision Damage Waiver is provided by the card company - this may have something to do with it.

I can't post a link but if you google: credit card covering cdw
then you'll find a few articles one from visa usa (although it is dated April 1, it is legit).

@burrows, that is correct. Depends on the card however.

OP make sure you are comparing like to like. US personal car insurance can have hire car insurance inclusive so they don't quote it for certain nationalities. For example, the Hertz US site doesn't always quote a full inclusive price while the IE one will.

As pointed out, US versions of the sites generally quote without the relevant insurance included, where international ones generally do.

All you are getting is a quote without including everything. Any bargain won't actually work, as they will require proof of insurance before giving you the car anyhow.

Don't use a US site for car hire, only a European one will give you an accurate picture.
