Is it possible to pass the driving test with only the 12 EDT lessons completed?

It's highly impractical for me to get named driver insurance under my parents names at the moment and at this stage I just want to get my licence. So, I've decided to go ahead and start doing my 12 EDT lessons and a few supplementary lessons to give me some more time on the road. If by the end I don't yet feel confident I'll get insurance, despite my parents never being around, but that's another issue. My main question is, is it possible to pass the Driving test the way I plan to go about it? My friends are saying practice during lessons is key, but they also say if anyone could scrape a pass with no effort, it would be me :P all opinions welcome.

It is possible to pass after only 12 EDT lessons. However, you never know what type of situations you'll need to react to on the day of the test. E.g car braking suddenly in front of you, roadworks, heavy rain, merging lanes, kids running across the road etc etc

The only way to get confident of being able to react correctly to these situations is through experience on the road. Failing to react to hazards seems to be one of those that people fail on, it often goes hand in hand with lack of observation.

If you feel confident though, go for it. It would be good test experience if nothing else

It IS possible. It's more likely to be a fail IMO.
Only today I sat in a test centre and a mother said she was nervous for her son as he came back in to the car park. "He's only done the 12." She said.

Out he came with a long face and a long walk to his car

I did my test before the EDT ever came in but just an example I suppose I was 18 yes had drove the car around the yard at home etc but that's all I got 6 lessons and pretest passed first time @ 19 I got my Rigid truck test passed first time after 4 lessons and pre test and @ 22 passed my bus test first time aswell after another 4 lessons and pre test so it is possible

I'm not a great driver by any stretch I had a great instructor same guy for all 3 and I suppose I'm fairly confident driving so nerves never really got to me I just learned the skills and did exactly what my instructor told me all 3 tests I never got more than 1 or 2 marks on the sheet so I'd say yes possible to pass with 12 lessons if you put your mind to it and have a good instructor

More than possible, I did mine 14 years ago at 18, 4 lessons the week of the test and passed first time, my brother was the same.

yeah see that's the thing, driving feels almost instinctive for me so I should feel confident enough. Having said that, I also see the point Pawblo Pugcasso makes about being put in unfamiliar situations, but you're never going to be prepared for every situation. I'm just going to put my mind to it and see if I pass, if not, well at least I'll have my 12 lessons done anyway :P

Even if you apply for your test today, you wont be given a date until your instructor signs you off. And even with that, it'll be a 2 week wait at least. This means you would have done 12 hours of driving, then waiting at least two weeks before driving again and then doing the test.

I'd definitely say do one or two pre-tests with your instructor before the test. Maybe one a week before, and another the day before. Then you'll be familiar with the way the test will go.

It may be cheaper than doing a second test and waiting a number of weeks

Personally if you do your 12 EDT's then jump straight into the test and pass (without even doing a pre-test) you must be pretty damn good.

Of course this doesn't include if you're learning in your own time as well.

Definitely, I did the 12 lessons as quick as possible and other than that drove in and out of work each day by myself.
Passed with only two minor marks against me, I was told its better than most results.

Once you know your stuff and have a calm level head you'll be fine
