    All,

I'm looking for a car at the moment ...

stumbled across a few Altea's in my online shortlisting ...

So what are they like, any know issues / things to look out for?

I'm looking at 04/05 cars and am strongly veering towards a mk5 TDI golf, but like the quirkiness / differentness of the Altea ...

    Help us out :D

the altea is a kinda mpv but without the clever stuff.
unless you need the practicality you should consider a Leon

Ok well you asked, and I have one, just short of 200k miles of fairly trouble free motoring, can't fault the car but they definitely fall into the quirky category, but I bought the car as it was a low mileage bargain diesel, and image is not important to me, this was my second SEAT, over the years its stood the test of time and (IMO) still looks good, I don't own the base model though, its called a Seat Altea reference sport, powered by the 140BHP 2.0TDi BKD engine, producing, 235 lb ft (320 Nm) @ 1750/rpm.

I've had a great experience owning it, and really can't emphasise that enough, it does all the lugging about (MTB weekends, family trips, dump runs, clearouts, to taxi service to the airport etc) and does it well. The real bonus is the rear occupant room, I'm 6' 4'' and with the front drivers seat extended fully, I and the rear passenger have loads of room, I don't think there’s another five star safety rated car out there with as much space in the rear, and that was crucial in my purchase of the car, it also has a decent turn of performance, I'm OCD about servicing it, but statistically SEAT owners generally take good care of their cars, and I fall into the category.

Not sure what Colm means about clever stuff, but there are ton's of clever interior storage space, rear seat split and fold, boot has two levels, and a cover, the rear shelf has a pull down drawer for even more storage, and more storage under the front drivers and passenger seat...there are Velcro straps under the rear bench for a full size golf umbrella..phew! so totally recommend the Altea, they are really easy to live with, and I don't think its a luck thing.

The bad - Of course its been relatively trouble free, however I have had the window regs go on both drivers and passenger side, one of the rear brake nipples seized, and it didn't start for me one morning, and I never found out why. Not bad for 9 years I guess.
