I wonder could anyone with access check the Ballina Herald from 1950 and 1955 for the deaths of Bertha McMonagle nee Jones and Joseph McMonagle respectively. I'm particularly interested to know the place of death of Bertha.

    Thanks

Hermy - I'll be in NLI tomorrow so can have a look for you then, if no one else can help. They have free access to the INA.

Pinky - is it necessary to book/order in advance the microfilms of newspapers not on the archive?I have to check a few that are not available online. Thanks, P.

No, but they are upstairs in the main reading room, rather than in the genealogy area.

    hi Hermy

I've found an obituary for Bertha McMonagle, died at her residence, Imperial Hotel, Ballina, 29 April 1950 [Ballina Herald 29 April 1950 p1]
she was a Jones of King Street & most of her family seemed to be in the hotel business.

Her husband Joseph died Monday, 27 Jun 1955; his obituary is in the Ballina Herald 2 July 1955 p4. The obituary states he was born in Prucklish, Letterkenny. He had three daughters and two sons.

    PM me for further information.

    That's terrific KildareFan.

Yes, Bertha was a Jones before marriage and the family ran the Imperial Hotel and the Moy Hotel in the town.

Bertha had spent some time in America in the early 1900's so as her death doesn't seem to be listed in the Irish civil death indexes I wondered if perhaps her death occurred overseas.

I didn't know Joseph's place of birth in Donegal so that's a great addition but other sources suggest he had three sons so I'll have to dig some more on that.

EDIT: Should have said sons - not daughters. Seems one of the sons died young in a boating accident.

Ahem......... Organized my meetings in Dublin today to allow a 2 hour visit to the NLI to look at said microfilms. Had to order them, and wait the usual hour. (Not complaining, just giving people a heads-up on the rules.)

Nice to know Pinky is human after all!:pac::pac:

It is news to me about the waiting time. :)

The Irish Times, Freeman's Journal and such like are in the self service filing cabinets, less popular newspapers have to be ordered in the usual way, for collection at the usual call times. One advantage of viewing the latter, is that the microfilm is often a virgin film, totally free of scratches.

Exact. Lesson learned for the next occasion. The films I looked through were unblemished and indeed were “less popular” ((I don’t do common.:p) Nor will I comment on virgin films, it might get me into trouble.

The new film readers in the NLI are great, (how I wish they were there in the days I needed them before the new online church registers!) and as always the staff were polite and very helpful within the constraints of their employment.
I don’t really regret the wait-hour I spent “dossing”, using the online sites downstairs for random searches.
