bike for my daughter - hybrid

    My daughter is going in to secondary school this year. I don't think she has stopped growing yet, so I don't want to buy something that will be really extravagant, but at the same time €500-€800 would be ok.

    I want a hybrid, ideally one that is sufficiently "unisex" that her younger brother might get use out of it after we buy her next bike in a few years, which will be after her growing stops I expect.

    I want disc brakes, i regard them as essential (for kids) especially who will be cycling in Dublin on rainy days.

    Bike will mainly be used to travel from Dundrum to Ranelagh for school, as well as the occasional family cycle at the weekends.

    I would be grateful for any suggestions.

    I am leaning towards this:

    I'd be inclined to get something 2nd hand with
    *mudguards
    *chainguard
    * simple low maintenance gearing
    * not a thief magnet
    * without suspension

    If new this might work it has hub gears and dynamo

    What height is she as I'll have a lapierre hybrid for for sale that was my other halfs but she doesn't use it as she uses her road bike all the time. I'll only be looking for €300 for it

    Tend to agree with ford2600 regarding no suspension and not a thief magnet. Schoolbooks are also stupidly heavy these days, so I'd certainly go for a rack, and have gearing that will get her and the books up all the hills without sweating too much. My daughter has more or less adopted her mums Giant Escape, which has stood the test of time very well. I'd also look a decent puncture resistant tyres that aren't too heavy as many low to mid-range bikes cut corners on stock tyres. At €475 the Escape City 3 with rack and mudguards seems like one of the better choices out there. No disc brakes, but for the road, I think well maintained v-brakes do a great job.
