I'd take the one through Terenure and avoid the Greenhills road.

I had the same commute but out to CityWest. The better option is through Terenure. When you get to the N81/M50 roundabout you can take a bike path which will lead you parrallel along the N81 up to the Square.

Ordinarily that part of the N81 is OK but during winter and occasionaly during rush hour the traffic can be rough. The bike path and route through the burbs will avoid most of that.

Better still, at the start, go down O'Connell St, College Green, George St, Portobello, Rathmines, right on Leinster Road, Terenure.

Greenhills road would be nicer then the N81, although I've never used the bike path on it. Could always use the Firhouse road or Main Road into Tallaght village instead of N81. The Terenure or Ole's route would be better then coming via Walkinstown.

I go out the Greenhills road way. There's a bus/bike lane from where you turn of the Coombe onto Cork st all the way out.

I'd take High street -- Thomas street -- Francis street to get to the Coombe, its less hectic than the crossroads at Clanbrassil street/Kevin street/Coombe
There's also nice friendly lollipop people at the bottom of Francis street to give you the nod to cross -- They should be back at work next week.

Also at the Childrens hospital take a left onto st Mary's road/ Bunting road. There's a bike crossing to help you get to the Walkinstown roundabout and you only need to cross St Peters road and cut past the Cherrytree pub to get to the Greenhills road.

That's what I am thinking myself just that I was always turning left to Ballinteer at the Yellow House I was only once in Tallaght traveled by bus it looked a bit scary I didn't see any bike paths there.

I do Ringsend to Tallaght through Rathmines and Terenure. I used to go the greenhills road but I find it to be scary as **** during rush hour. Especially Dublin to Tallaght, not so much in the other direction strangely enough.

I'd go the way marked in grey - it's a bit quieter to Templeogue than going via Terenure. I'm happy enough to negotiate big roundabouts so I wouldn't be bothered by the N81/M50 junction. Some might be a bit more nervous, although the other route isn't much better as it includes the notorious Walkinstown Roundabout.

The Walkinstown Roundabout is much easier to navigate on a bike, than a car, much better visibility, no car pillars obstructing your view
