I want to pick people's brains on what age a young bull would be fit to serve say 20 cows. Would say a 15 or 16 mth old bull be up to the job or would just depend on size more than age?

So you think if he was big enough his age wouldn't matter

depends on the breed of bull. we wouldnt sell a bull for cows under 18 months

Any time we have a young bull we'd give him a jump anytime from 12mths at the odd handy cow that would come bulling.
Again he'd be run with the cows he'd have been after bulling several, on a put and take basis so he'd have some idea what it's all about.

We'd sell plenty of limousin bulls at 16 months, but they're sold with the precursor that they are only used on heifers or a handful of cows (less than 10) in his first season. They would also have been tried on cows here before they're sold so they know what they're at. Will this bull be serving cows inside or outside as he'll only wreck himself serving cows in a house. A mature bull knows who and what he has served and will go and lie down whereas a younger bull will horse away until he's knackered.

It also depends if bull is being used in a field or in sheds..field a lot safer for a young bull.

100% agree with this. Young Bulls have a habit or running themselves into the ground following cows. Have bought a few at that age and 10 cows is more than enough for them to be honest.

Young bull and older bull are let loose in a field of heifers. Young bull gets all excited and says to the older fella "HEIFERS" all excited looking. Lets run down and bull one of them. Older bull goes lets take our time and bull them all!

I've a young bull under 2 years running with my cows. A neighbour bought a young yearling to run with his few cows but he wasn't putting them in calf. I told him he could use my bull, so whenever he had one bulling all I had to do was leave the cow outside the gate and the bull would come running over. No sooner was the gate open than he would be up on them.
The gas thing now is whenever he hears the chain rattling on the gate, the head is up and he comes running over. He's a grand quiet fella too. I hope he stays that way.

LATE Jan 14 born CH bull here went to fields with 25 cows in may, bulled every last one, young old, big, small, grumpy, quiet, no problem

nailed one of them on slats in april before he went out

if hes big enough then fine, just make sure he is with the cows for a while before they need serving
