So the LE Aisling is moored in Dun Laoghaire (was watching her as she came in).

Do the crew get some time off the ship? I work in DL but have never seen any crew (in uniform) about when there are NS boats docked.

Crew members very rarely go ashore in uniform.

Particularly in Dublin as they would be lucky to get back alive!

The times when ship are alongside these days is normally for R&R or some offical function in the nearby area.

There is always a duty watch on every Irish Naval Vessel 24 hrs a day, 365 days a year.

Cheers - must suck for them to arrive in DL; much handier if they tie up in city centre.

Are NS personel at risk wearing their uniform in public?

Only if they go to Coppers....

    Yes.

5 navy lads in uniform walk into local bar, pull all the women.

Local apes get jealous and wait for sailor to go outside on his own.

Now that is been slightly tougne in cheek, there is also the fact the lads are off duty and might like to go for a pint or two.

It doesn't look very well if some lad tired after 19 hour days for best part of two weeks has one too many while wearing his uniform.

That said "walking out dress" or number 2's is still worn from time to time to cetain social engagements.

Granted it's many years ago, but a crewman in uniform got a hiding from some local scumbags for having a short cut and being in uniform. He almost lost his eyesight which affected his naval career (radar op). He brought a suit against them but they countersued on a tissue of lies. Of course these scumbags come from respectable families.
