Is there any type of cover out there that I could book flights now as I definitely will not know until the middle of June 2016 if we need the flights or not, in which they will be sky high compared to now..

The same happened this year, last Xmas, I could get flights to Georgia for about 250 return, we only found out the first week of July that we were definitely going for an athletics event that was taking place 3 weeks after that, the flights then cost me 570 return and it was 3 flights over and the same back, going over was ok but coming back was torture:(

The only thing I can think of is that you go for a higher class fare that allows refunds/changes, e.g. the Aer Lingus 'Flex' fare. This may not be economical for you though.

No, the whole point of them being cheap is that you can't a refund. The airline make less money but it's a guaranteed fare. That's the compromise.

Have found a site, Rumbo.com, never heard of them before but they offer a full flex for a price and if you cancel your original flight, you get a 90%(of what you orginally paid) voucher for another flight within 12 months, no refund of such..

    Sounds dodgy.

I wouldn't risk using an OTA for that, they are notorious for problems when you want to change/cancel something.

When you mention athletics, could you get any help from the athletics body, if it is athletics again you would be travelling for? Is the delay to see are you picked?

If the son is picked, he would be sorted by the athletics body but us parents have to wait until the official team is announced. Hotels are no problem as have free cancellation when booked in good time.

If the worst comes to the worst, you could always sell them on and get some money back?

I suppose you could decide on a holiday in Georgia regardless, get the cheaper prices now and then if he's picked it's win-win.

Travel insurance policies generally only cover canceling flights if someone dies, falls seriously ill etc etc. They don't provide coverage if you just change or mind, or something doesn't fall into place that necessitates the trip in the first place, such as not qualifying for an athletic event.

Orbitz do some good refunds and offers. Check their policies
