Great price, they seem to be still one of the most popular watches around

My buddy just got back from New York and i asked him to pick me up the Metal Strap moto 360 in bestbuy for only $149 as a back up to my leather strap one that i paid €224 for over here.

Even though the dollar is strong against the euro it just puts into perspective how we're being absolutely raped on this side of the Atlantic.

New moto 360 2 due to be announced in September so might be reason for price drops

Yeah, for those who haven't picked one up yet (myself included) I would wait. The Moto 360 looks great, but the tech inside is still fairly old, and by that I mean, they used really old tech when they made it, and the battery life sucks because of it.

Hopefully the Moto 360 2 will offer some much need new hardware aimed at smart watches that will offer a decent battery upgrade.

In reality, how useful is a smart watch.... especially as I'd usually have my phone either in my pocket or at hands reach on the desk / couch etc.

Not bashing, just wondering people's real experience.
Personally for me I can't currently see the usefulness, especially with such bad battery life. I've enough with charging my phone daily!

It is an old processor in the 360, but since the 5.1.1 update performance has been maximised and battery life is greatly improved. The 360 2 will undoubtedly be better, but it will also be a lot more expensive. I always liked the look of the 360 but couldn't justify buying one due to price, functionality and performance. But at this price point and with 5.1.1 addressing the other issues, it made it a good buy.

I would have been of the same mindset, but I always liked the look of the 360 and the custom watch faces, so was interested in it for that reason. When I came across it at this price I did some reading up and have been surprised at how many people are giving it great reviews and saying how they are using it a lot more than they thought they would. Simple things like being able to check notifications immediately if your phone is in your pocket. Or using the watch to control your music. Smart watches won't be for everyone but I think that I will get a lot of use from it.

it's still a great bargain alert for those interested. I personally like the idea, but not ready to invest until they sort out battery life with these smart devices. (Nevermind watches, tablets and smartphones are still rubbish for battery life!)
For this price OP, I'm almost tempted though... I travel alot, would be cool for boarding cards. :)

I'm sort of in the same boat. I haven't seen much benefit with the first generation, simply because the usefulness is outweighed by the lack of battery life.

I do like the idea of quickly checking texts, answering/dismissing calls without having to reach/take out my phone. I use a Note 4, so sometimes I prefer to not have to take it out to do those things, and even change the song or something.

Another benefit is navigation. The Google maps on the wrist is pretty epic, although very specific for certain situations.

Unless they can give at least 1 full day battery with heavy usage, they really aren't going to be all that useful beyond a handy fun gadget.

I did think once they would be handy for security, if they had a function so you have to enter your passcode on your watch instead of the phone itself, completely preventing someone from using your device without the watch.

I know Android has the smart unlock for bluetooth devices, which can also be handy.

I will wait to see what the 360 2 has to offer, but I fear an all day battery is still a ways away.

Since the 5.1.1 update battery life is apparently about two days. From the reviews I read, battery life didn't seem to be a problem as you just get into the habit of taking it off at night and popping it onto the wireless charging cradle which turns it into a bedside clock.

Would the screen be large enough to enable scanning though?

But that $149 doesn't include tax and is a clearance price. How long was the watch out when you paid €224 for it?

With NY Sales tax it would have been about $162 or roughly €143.

You're correct but that's €146 for the Metal version and the bargain alert is €156 for the leather, basically we're still getting screwed, i bought my leather one back in April.

As for the old tech and battery, i get a full day out mine with ambient screen mode turned on and still go to bed with 20%.

Also after the latest update it supports wifi so you can leave your phone at home and still get notifications once you're connected to a network.

Just check out any of the Comparisons to either the LG G Watch, Asus Zenwatch or Sony smartwatch and the Moto 360 still comes out on top even though it was launched before them with "older tech".

Look for anyone who wants to wait for the Moto 360 2 then that's their choice but I'm guessing it will be close to the €300 mark and from someone who's used the original for the last 5 month's it's a serious bit of kit for €156.

Can these be used for tracking runs / cycling etc. without having a smartphone in your pocket?

Not the Moto 360, afaik the only Android smartwatch with an independent gps chip is the Sony Smartwatch 3.
    But it's Fugly imo.

No, there's no GPS in the Moto 360. There is a heartrate monitor and pedometer, but it would need to be connected to a phone for proper tracking.

It looks like the 2nd gen will be twice the price of this - £250 for the cheapest model. It's on pre-order with mobile fun.

I would wait it out. The 1st gen wont disappear completely when the new model comes out. There will still be some available.

IMO, these devices need at least 3 times more battery, and things like accurate HR monitors and GPS would make them worthwhile. But as they stand, having another device that needs charging every night just isn't worth it. Perhaps it'll take a couple more generations to get where I think it needs to be, but this isn't cheap enough for me to jump on it.

Potentially this could be even cheaper when the second gen 360 is actually available to buy.
May be worth waiting if you're on the fence.

Smartphones have had how many generations now and they still haven't mastered battery life, they've actually gone backwards if anything if you look at the Samsung Galaxy S6 thread on here.

Battery technology in general hasn't improved, manufacturers have tried to make processors and screens more energy efficient and added fast chargers because nothing else can be done with a lithium ion battery.

You can only get so many mAh into a battery and the size of the device determines the size of the battery so you can only expect so much from a tiny smartwatch before you start sacrificing features like the pebble.

I can go to work on a Friday at 6:45 and the odd week we'll go straight out after work and I'll get in at 3am and I'll still have 2 or 3%.
I put my watch onto it's wireless charger (0% effort) and plug my charger into my phone i go to sleep and when i wake up i have two fully charged devices.

I don't see peoples problems with having to charge a device while they are sleeping, what else would you be doing with it.

It's a great device at a great price and for half the price with 90% of the features.

If anyone is on the fence about buying this, I would recommend reading/viewing some recent reviews. Google "moto 360 5.1.1 review" to get an idea of the functionality and real world experience of this watch.

I'd go for it if it went down below 100 but don't see the need at that price
