Generic vs. Branded prescription drug

Hi, I am wondering is there generally much difference between branded and prescription drugs and if I want a generic do I need to ask the Doctor to write the generic name? I don't know the generic name actually just the brand name of a nasal spray I'm prescribed. Just trying to figure if I can reduce my costs. Cheers.

Have a chat with your local pharmacy to see if there is a generic available.
Some brands have generics available but not all.
