Maintaining warranty but not used dealer

    can anyone confirm if you need to have the car maintained by a dealer in order to maintain the warranty?

    I use a very decent local mechanic for my car but wifes car is only 2yrs into her 7yr KIA warranty

    Its up for a service (first for her) and would like to use local mechanic instead of going miles out of way to a Kia dealer

    For the sake of goodwill just use the dealer for the warranty period, it will make life much easier if you have problems later on although it is not strictly required for the warranty ( a yearly inspection by Kia is required though I believe )

    The remaining 5 years of the 7 year warranty would be outside the mandatory 2 year warranty so it would be up to Kia if they choose to honour it or not.

    Afaik in the terms and conditions of the Kia 7 year warranty the car is required to be inspected by a Kia dealer every 12 months.

    If it were me I'd get the oil and filters changed at the dealer once a year for the duration of the warranty and get the other work done using genuine parts, by an indy if it works out cheaper.

    AFAIK EU Block Exemption means a manufacturer's warranty cannot be conditional on using the manufacturer's own parts or repair network.

    According to the FAQ the regs apply to both basic warranties and extended warranties given around the time the car was first sold but not to 3rd party warranties or warranties sold some years after the car was sold.

    would a Hyundai dealer be acceptable ? they are same car/company?
    There is a Hyundai dealer 10min from house so would be handy

    Believe me kia are notorious for insisting on a kia service history for warranty claims.

    Ive had multiple arguments with them over it.But it's their warranty covered by them so they can ask for it.
    Forget this block exemption stuff...if you have an issue they will ask to see a main dealer history.And they won't cover you.I've had claims rejected because customers didn't have kia history.

    Just get it serviced in a dealer until your warranty is up.

    You have legal rights as a consumer for 2 years (or more depending on country) but that is not the same as a manufacturer guarantee (what many people call a warranty).
    There's a lot of similarity but there are key differences, the biggest one being that these rights only apply to private consumers not businesses.
    Your rights are also actioned against the seller (dealer) not the manufacturer, if the dealer goes belly up so do your rights. A manufacturer guarantee claim is against the manufacturer.
    Other differences include: a manufacturer cannot place conditions on your statutory rights but they can on a guarantee. Also, after 6 months the onus switches to the consumer to show the defect was there when the car was sold (even though it may not have been apparent until later), you don't have that with guarantees.
    In addition some things are not covered under consumer rights, for example under Irish consumer law you have no entitlement to claim for minor defects. So say e.g. you have a paint bubble on a the filler flap a court could rule it a minor defect whereas a manufacturer would normally cover it under their standard paint guarantee.
