Some people dont like generic US sitcom. Not the first, not the last.

Im waiting for a certain comment to come up in this thread though.

    American sitcom, usually a disgrace.

Anti-catholic, might actually make it watchable. (But I doubt it)

Having a "cynical" view of the church is "anti-Roman Catholic" now?

I haven't seen anything that was "anti catholic" in what footage they showed there, it has to be said.
Currents is a news magazine program with stories of faith from around the
block and around the world. Founded in 2009, we are the first daily Catholic

OP, have you actually watched the pilot yourself or just this one-sided, two-minute news report?

I wonder what Alf Garnett wuold say about it.

I wouldn't find it offensive, from the clips shown it looks to be just another middle of the road sitcom using worn gags and tired stereotypes.

If you want proper well written Catholic satire Father Ted is still where it's at. Also for the Protestants, Vicar of Dibley is fantastically witty.

Ridiculous beliefs are allowed be made fun of just as much as anything else. Im anti all religions not just catholics but I don't see how this is 'disgraceful'.

I think the OP was being tongue and cheek with the use of disgraceful in the thread title.

actually no - I hope

Religion teacher taught me all about it. which in itself is interesting as I'm not catholic but in the 1990s it was deemed grand that I did religion in school anyway...

Course. There are no non-catholics, only catholics who haven't discovered they're catholic yet.

Would be great to get the opinion of an anti-jewish catholic. You know, for balance.
You know, one of those folk who killed William Tyndale.

the internet tells me he is protestant, his killers may well have been ok with jews.

nonetheless the more important point is that who needs balance during an internet rant.
    really

The priest in the interview saying that it won't last because it's not funny reminds me of this debate between John Cleese and Michael Palin and some bishops about 'the life of Brian' where the bishops keep calling it a second rate movie.

Yeah Christianity is an easy target in American TV and film, Christians usually being shown as bible thumping rednecks. Funny how other religions don't get the same treatment...

I cant imagine there would be a sitcom on US TV making fun at Judaism

The must insulting part is the belief that they are "a typical Irish Catholic family". Clearly Dan Savage has not actually spent much time with a real Irish family in Ireland.

The jews have the holocaust, the muslims will bomb you to death, the buddhists are too laid back and the atheists too sensible.

Scientology gets a good thrashing, they're even madder than the catholics. :D

There are no Irish Catholics outside of island of Ireland as Irish Catholics are members of the Catholic church in Ireland, Paddy O'Finnegan from Ballydonagan who doesn't go to mass is not an Irish Catholic.

A 4th generation Irish American family, they drop the American bit and label them Irish like Italian Americans are labelled Italian even though most at this stage have very little left in common with their modern day ancestral homelands.

Curb Your Enthusiasm had a number of storylines based on Judaism, and ones that really pushed the envelope, the sex offender at the Seder, where the Holocaust survivor meets the Survivor tv show participant, having sex with a Palestinian woman, being overheard calling his wife Hitler etc. etc. etc.

Jerry Seinfeld, Woody Allen, sheesh if anything Jews showed a marked ability to laugh at themselves. One show and the Catholics are seething...

You have to give sitcoms a fair go before you rubbish them.

Many of the top sitcoms ever were nearly pulled before they became established. Then the experts come out as say they knew it was always going to be a hit.

Its actually a sign of strength when human beings are able to laugh at themselves.

The carry on of some in the muslim religion is just proof of how weak their religious beliefs are. The first minor affront/insult and their whole edifice comes crashing down. Do you think that if people truly believed that they would react in such a way at a minor affront/insult.

Sitcoms are bit like religion ! You have to give them a fair go to see if they are right for you and even the best come to an end. A bit like the catholic church (not saying its the best by any means) in Ireland. It had its hay day but people have tired of it and it should just have the final episode and be done with it.

A little perspective. The 'Life of Brian' is genius and incredibly funny. Unlike others here, I have a friend in Texas who has seen the pilot and she says that it just focuses on some perceived RC sore-points, eg the gay community, priests with a high standard of living etc. However, the biggest problem with it is that is it not funny in the slightest. She isn't RC but she is a devote Christian.

There does appear to be something a bit iffy with how Irish American Catholics are portrayed,The Gallaghers in US Shameless,The Griffins from Family Guy,the Black Donnellys amongst others. There is definitely a list of who you can safely stereotype on American TV and I.A.C. are on that list with WASPs,Italian-Americans,Poor white southerners,Evangelicals among others.

Larry David may be able to poke fun at his own tribe, but would the show be less accecptable if it contained the same humour yet was formulated by a gentile crew? Ditto with Chappelles show and The Boondoncks-would white or black people be so comfortable if it was white script writers lampooning and making fun of Black culture?

Many don't like it,but in my opinion "South Park"is the only equal opportunities satirie on prime time US TV,I think that is all people are saying regards this new show.

    ............

Seeing as this is written by a gay fella from an Irish catholic family, I'm not seeing your point. Chappelles show was co-written by a white guy. Black Jesus has two writers, one white, one black.

Well, the show looks really bad from that trailer. Looks like it belongs on youtube rather than the TV. But let them at it, I'm not going to act offended by it. Do I think that there are certain groups who get offended a lot easier or are more vocal about getting offended than others? Yes, but I don't think we fall into that bracket.

I was going to post about Judaism getting a free ride but to be fair after thinking about it Curb Your Enthusiasm has a lot of storylines that don't always paint Jews in the best light, the Palestinian episode in particular, seemed to be critical of Jewish society in America. I think the UK has some sitcom about a Muslim family, which doesn't look very good but I assume rips the piss on some of the Muslim culture in the UK.
