.....I got a quote online from AXA yesterday, and they followed up by phone. ....they're all at it.

However here's a new twist: in the course of the conversation they told me if my car was off the road for more than 3 months ( as it is, on SORD ) that they won't provide a quote. .....unless you provide the actual SORD notice. ....

..These guys are just making **** up. ...

Really really odd, you would think with it off the road that the risk would be hugely reduced.

Renewed my insurance today, got a quote from **3.ie which was nearly twice my renewal, could not believe it. Haven't paid that kind of money since the first year I drove and got my insurance with Ansvar for £700!

Asked what was the cause of it being so high and was told it nothing specific but insurance costs were rising. Only got the missus insured with same crowd for 360 last month on a 151 car!

Back to the renewal I went and said I would consider dropping value of car, errh...told to leave it alone as it actually raised the quote renewal price!!!

Renewed for this year but its not working for the motorist anymore. I used haggle and change every year. Never paid more that 360 and that is what I paid today.

You are only covered on Wednesdays if you are carrying geese to a fair.

On Thursdays you may only make left hand turns.

There is pretty much nothing you could make up and attribute to the the irish outposts of insurance companies that would be too far fetched. Even Mario Balotelli is in awe of the bonkers stories that come out from them.

My car insurance went from €590 last year to €990 this year. (Same insurance company since 2006) it always got cheaper every year. Tried an online quote as a new customer and the results came back as could not offer a quote. So I rang them after getting at least 8 new quotes from shopping around and narrowing it down to 3. I asked why my insurance had risen by €400 considering I have another year no claims (never claimed since passing my test in 1993). Was told the insurance industry prices have risen. Told them I had 3 quotes and could it be matched as close as possible. The cheapest I had was €472. The guy on the phone put me on hold "to see what he could do" with the price. He came back with a new competitive quote of €986. I asked him if he actually thought that €986 was competitive compared to the 3 quotes I had told him I had. His answer was "yes it's competitive" because with this quote I get windscreen cover breakdown etc etc. all of which I had on the other quotes. Anyway I went with the cheapest quote. What surprised me is the 3 quotes were more than double last year with the same company's,but went down in price this year. (3 well known company's). Maybe it had to do with turning 40 I'm not sure. The Most expensive quote I got was from a well known company that used to trade under a different company name but is now another named company, and that quote was €2345. So out of interest I decided to try a new customer quote For the same vehicle and put my age down as 24 with 2 points and 5 years no claims. New quote €786.
The insurance industry needs a radical overhaul.

Which reminds me, last renewal AIG wouldn't quote me themselves because I was over 2.5 litres but I was able to get a quote through a broker which was within a tenner of my best quote - with AIG! I can never understand this.

I'm really looking forward to renewal time.....

They wouldn't quote me over the phone because my car is a 00. Too old.

The dude on the phone said he'd send me out a proposal form and send it on to the underwriters to see if I could get a quote.

I asked him is there any point. Will I fill in all the same details I've just given him and send it off only to be told no again? He couldn't answer.

The insurance industry in Ireland is ridiculous. And I say that as someone who's worked in it for a few years. In both claims and sales. Not anymore though.

Another annoyance of mine is the lack of multi vehicle policies, or even a discount for having full time use of another vehicle.

I ride my motorbike most of the time. I do about 350km a week on it. I rarely use the car. I'd say I do less than 1500 miles a year. It should stand to reason then, that if I'm rarely in the car, the risk of me crashing the car is reduced... Try tell that to the companies.

The risk of the car being stolen however is higher ;)

Only an issue if the thieves whole family cut themselves while stealing it.

Or at least it's the third party damages are the excuse for every other thing. I guess they have a completely different excuse to suit in this situation.

Can you have a named driver on that policy? I know the Ts&Cs of classic policies are a little different and some don't allow that.

i have my mother listed as a named driver,so yes. she has her own policy with aig so that might have helped. all you can do is ring and try.

i use first ireland as the broker

Hmmm, that might be an angle for me SD. I do less than that and my yoke is 18 years old. And I'm bouncing off the bumpstops of 50 so...

In the car, no, definitely not more than that. Would they take an Almera on as a classic though? Some places, when I worked for a broker, wouldn't take any Japanese models as classics.

I'd also have to have a main driver vehicle... Would the bike suffice for that or would it need to be another car, do you know?

Feck. Yea I forgot about the no Japanese and the main car. There goes that notion. :(

My insurance with Axa was increased from €560 to €690 so I decided to shop around. I ended up on the phone with the AA haggling for an hour and I managed to get it back down to €560. One week in and my car broke down in Dublin, found it really difficult to drive and asked could they tow it back to my home town so as to get my local mechanic to look at it. They said that they could only tow a car within twenty miles and if I wanted to get it towed beyond that they would charge me for it. Absolute shysters. You can't be too suspicious of insurance companies these days.

only condition they gave me is car must be 15 years old and unmodified mechanically.
I have custom exhaust, wheels and stereo, but they said that that dosent matter, its only if it been performance modded.

Even a huge body kit made no difference. I'm 43, but no idea if there is an minimum age requirment.

It's my only and daily driver, no main car etc needed.

The hassle I had this year and the permutations of pricing these Shisters come up with is giving me cause for concern. Lets take my example, I am fully comp, 8 year old car that they valued at 8K and I valued at 5 k as that is near the offer I got from a dealer on tradein. Reducing the value is akin to saying your car is older, they are penalising you at every turn.
It is making me consider trading it in for a new car on PCP as over the next 5 years tere is a clutch -dmf, timing belt and suspension bushings to be done. What is the point if they load your insurance for having an old but safe car?

Name ,and shame, give insurance co name etc,,,might wake ppl up,obviously lots of ppl stay with the same company year in/out,without much haggling etc, thus making it easier for insurance companies to extort more mula, each year,if the cops concentrated on non insured drivers etc,L drivers without fully qualified drivers in car,and idiot driver's, insurance should stay within reasonable prices, until then, they have an excuse to rise prices annually,,, rant over

You might want to brush up on what open drive is man.

Open drive covers people to drive your car.

I presume you mean driving other cars?

DOC is fine in an emergency as it generally offers third party only but it is only for cars that you do not own. I know however there were a couple of insurers that had comp DOC available for an additional premium.

Sorry but that makes no sense.

Unless Im mistaken you are saying that if you borrow a car from A N Other, anyone else is covered to drive it once they have a full licence?

Are you based in Ireland because thats not how insurance works.

If you have a policy it covers you to drive other peoples cars, with their permission, under your own insurance.

If you have open driving, which is usually for people with full licences aged between 25 and 70, they are covered to drive your car only.

There is no way that your insurance would cover anyone to drive someone elses car.

Im named on my wifes car insurance, Im covered to drive her car only.

She has driving of other cars as she holds the insurance policy but I do not as Im not the policy holder.

Am I taking you up wrong?

Maybe you have a motor trade policy?

Otherwise I cannot see how what you are saying is true, that is of course if the way Im interpreting your post is correct.

    I think you are confused.

I don't have any policy in Ireland at all. When I am here I borrow cars that have cover for any driver between 25 and 71.

Ah, so the cars you drive have open drive, thanks for clarifying.
