Passenger was ‘insistent of wearing his man purse’ according to reports

A man has been tasered by police on board an aircraft flying from Gatwick airport to Belfast.
The man reportedly wanted to take two pieces of hand luggage on to the plane.
The incident leading to the man’s arrest happened on board an Easyjet flight waiting to depart from Gatwick to Belfast at just after 8am.

What the hell was in that man purse? He must have gone postal to have required a tasering. I've seen some minor incidents of air rage in my time, but nothing on this scale, by the sounds of it. Ever witness any good oul air rage incidents yourselves?

Nothing major, there is always at least 1or 2 that get told they can't carry on and kick up a stink.

He really should have self identified as a woman and stood firm on the right to carry a handbag. Imagine the the wailing and gnashing of teeth if she was denied that!

It says nothing about a handbag, rather a man purse. Are you allowed put your purse in your bag?

Sounds like a legitimate reason for tasering in fairness.

He must have kicked up some racket to be tasered, I'm surprised phone footage of the incident hasn't emerged yet.

Tasering seems a bit much! He must have been acting completely like a mad man.

    Shocking stuff.

Should've taserted him in the man-purse. Cheek of him, bringing luggage onto an aeroplane. Taser some sense into 'em, I say!!

    A black man…

Sounds like an utter failure of negotiation

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/law-and-order/11814139/Man-tasered-on-easyJet-plane-at-Gatwick-after-row-over-two-pieces-of-hand-luggage.html

Why on earth shouldn't he bring a man-bag on board? I bring my laptop bag on, separately from my wheelie case, and no one's objected, though Ryanair once decided to charge me £50 and put my wheelie in the hold. Very surprised at this overreaction.

If they specify one bag as carry on luggage, that applies to women too. You just put your handbag in your other carry on luggage and get on with it.

This guy could have done the same.

    Easyjet:
What is my cabin baggage allowance?
    All passengers
    ONE cabin bag
    Maximum size of 56 x 45 x 25cm including handles and wheels.

easyJet Plus, FLEXI fare, Upfront and Extra Legroom customers
    One cabin bag as above
Plus ONE additional small under seat bag (For example a handbag or laptop)
Maximum size of 45 x 36 x 20cm which will need to be placed under the seat in front.

Ryanair must be preparing their new ads and rubbing their hands!
    Ryanair:
    CABIN BAGGAGE
One cabin bag weighing up to 10 kg with maximum dimensions of 55cm x 40cm x 20cm, plus 1 small bag up to 35 x 20 x 20 cms may be carried per passenger*.

(Ryanair does put a limit on the number of cabin bags - 90 per flight - but still, I'd say they'll gain passengers from this debacle.)
    Aer Lingus:
    Max weight 10kg (22lb)
    Max size 55cm H (21.5") x 40cm W (15.5") x 24cm D (9.5")
Plus one small personal item: Small handbag, laptop,
duty free or baby changing bag.
    Max size 25cm H (10”) x 33cm W (13”) x20cm D(8”)

Not to mention Gatwick - I'd say passengers will be putting a note in their passport "Any airport but Gatwick" after this! I would!

They should've tasered the cvnt that called the Police over a man bag before it got to that situation.

‘I just cannot believe the easyJet guy had to get the police involved at the airport. It seems symptomatic of the way easyJet try and bully people. They're not answerable to anyone.

And probably many more Easyjet incidents.

Purse is American English for handbag. As is (bewilderingly) 'pocketbook', in some parts of the U.S.

I think he was in it for a claim. And he might well win. All he has to do is say he's transexual and they have a discrimination case on their hands. If women can take on a handbag men can't be told they can't.

I think the original story is odd enough without having to invent even stranger scenarios and non-existent legal principles.

Unfortunately, his claim will fall as easyJet will just direct him to their baggage rules (which I quote above), which refuse handbags.

They've bought themselves a handbag-load of bad publicity, though, as have Gatwick.

If the internets have taught me anything its that the footage will emerge.
    And it will be ****e.

Easier to just imagine a vertical frame shot of the back of an airplane seat.

Then imagine said section bouncing and shaking for 3 minutes of irrelevance which you shall never get back.

Eventually it shakes in the right direction to reveal a policemans back.

The sound of a crisp bag being scrunched up several thousand times.

    The floor of a plane.

Some raised voices saying something indistinguishable and repetitive.

A womans voice going 'oh my god hmmph muhh mummph mmmph'

The back of a seat again.

    Then aaaarrrgh arrrrghhh.

    Nothing distinguishable.

A giant sized crisp packet being scrunched.

The curious thing about this is that Easyjey and Ryanair rarely fly the same route.

Easyjet in-flight magazine this year for July "The Twelfth".
"Hundreds of colourful parades take place across Northern Ireland on 12 July bank holiday to commemorate the 1690 Battle of the Boyne. They're great to watch, just check ahead for travel disruptions and advice."

They obviously avoid trouble when they can.

Mad the way all the clues and hints are there for people to see it very well could be the company that was the driving force behind this madness, and drove the individual to this complaint, and yet still people assume he either snapped 'something fierce', or he was just being an assh0le.

Can they introduce tasering for people who spend 10 minutes standing fiddling with their luggage in the overhead bin while a long queue of people wait to get past and into their seats? Or poisoned blow-pipe darts? The stewardess could fire them from up at the door. Pffffft-twap....

I travelled with Easyjet last week, their ground staff (or 3rd party ground staff) have become very strict on the one bag only rule, even for womens handbags they made them all step aside to pack them into their carry on. Pointless really as they all took them back out on the plane anyway.

Ryanair have become more relaxed about the whole thing, EJ allow you to carry two items if you have their equivalent of priority.

"He has now been sectioned under the Mental Health Act.
A police spokesman said: "On Thursday evening, following examination by doctors, he was detained under Section 2 of the Mental Health Act for admission into a psychiatric unit for further assessment and treatment in the interest of his own health, safety and protection of others."

Maryanne, if you read the OP, you'd see it links to an Irish Times article written at lunchtime yesterday.

I just have no idea what article you're referencing, or why you think I have some duty to follow-up on other media.

It's fairly simple. Instructions are being issued. Passengers have to follow them.
The person issuing the instructions might be wrong/overly strict/an asshole, but it always boils down to the same thing: an instruction has been issued, the passenger has to follow the instruction.
The rule is the same as with police, if you now start arguing/mouthing off/being uncooperative/aggressive, you will be asked again a few times, if the instruction is not being followed, you will be carted off. There are no allowances for people who think they are special little flowers and the rules don't apply to them.

This was not about a manbag, this was about someone playing the big man/mouthing off/being uncooperative/abusive (or in this case a few sandwiches short). On an airplane this WILL result in being carted off. it really is very, very simple. Anyone who doesn't have the capacity to understand that, well I don't want to share an airplane with them.

Where does this notion that women are allowed an extra bag come from? It's not true.

What did happen was that airlines didn't rigorously enforce their rule for a long time, so if someone just ignored the rule and carried another smallish bag on board, most times nothing was said. But I've been asked, or seen others asked, several times to put my handbag inside my hand luggage, and always did. I really don't think you can just refuse to do so if told to.
