Possibly but it's no harm to have some at the ready so that you can hop straight into a taxi at JFK or head for the Long Island Railway.

This is how much 200 US Dollars will cost you based on today's published rates and taking commission into account. Threads like this on boards almost always attract posters who chip with the suggestion that An Post is best because of the 'no commission' BS, they are almost never cheaper than both of the main banks as you can see below.....

    AIB €185.20
    An Post €186.53
    BoI €188.31

When you're there and taking money out of an ATM, try to avoid ATMs in small stores and McDonalds, use the ones in banks instead as they are likely to levy a smaller charge. Also it's worth checking your own bank's schedule of charges and see what they charge for a non-Euro ATM withdrawals, there's usually a minimum charge so you need to make sure not to be taking out small amounts or you will get screwed.

Yeah I was thinking take out 500 dollars at a time or something like that. We're not going to NYC but it's still a big city so should be fine for bank machines, cheers for the advice!

OP, if you take money out of your credit card from an ATM and it's a cash advance you get charged extra fees. I usually put only onto my credit card to get around this.

Lots of ATM's there charge, typically $3-$5 a go no matter how much you take out. ATM's attached to bank branches sometimes have no charge added.
