    Hi all,

I traded in my car to a dealers a month ago. This morning, i received a phone call from them saying that they notice a rattle in it when cold - and that the flywheel is falling out of it - or needs changing (sorry, i'm not too up to speed on the technics of cars).

They're now looking for me to pay them something towards the cost of having it replaced? I never noticed a rattle out of it - the only reason i changed the car was purely for fuel economy reasons.

Where do i stand on this?

    Thanks.

If they looked at the car before you traded it in then it's sold as seen as far as I'm aware.
    You didn't offer any warranty.
This guy is chancing his arm.

    Ha ha ha ha.

Repeat ad nauseum if he rings you back. He is a business, you are a consumer, if this is how he operates I suspect he won't be in business much longer. His suggestion is laughable.

The deal has been done. Game over for them. Just don't answer your phone, simple as.

Did you give them a warranty with the car or was any implied?
I take it you have your new car already

Don't know where you live but where I'm from customers don't generally give warranties very often

Well you can tell him that that a warranty on your end wasn't part of the deal

Yes, i've already taxed my car, and when i check on the reg of the other one - it states the date that it was purchased by the dealer.

Politely tell him to Foxtrot Oscar and if he calls again inform him you will go to the guards to report him for harassment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 384 ✭✭durtybit

Tell him you will send on the warranty details to him (send him a blank page in the post)

I think he's probably playing on the fact that i admitted i don't know a lot about cars etc.... and i didn't argue on price etc... probably too laid back.

How's the car you bought running? More to the point... Have you got it checked by your own mechanic? If he's as shady with this who knows what he's sold you (I'm sure its fine but you've 6 months warranty best make sure now).

It's running great. I did call to my mechanic and he took it for a spin and had a look under the hood etc. All seems good.

Tell him the car you bought has a bigger rattle.

Tell him where to go, what an absolute fool. I've heard of people ringing the previous owner of a private sale with off the wall things such as one guy in work got a phone call off the buyer of his old car 2 year later saying that the engine has gone and he will be getting his solicitor onto him. As you can imagine he was told to go and ****e there and then on the phone. But a "dealer" should have a bit more cop on!

Well, the dealer could always file a complaint with the small claims court, I am sure the clerk there needs a good laugh too.

Dealers looking for warranties from punters, I have now officially heard everything.

I don't believe dealers can avail of this service

Was this a main dealer or a used car dealer ??

Either way its upto them to value the car properly in the first place.

It could be his way of getting out of honouring his guarantee to you.
So every customer that trades in a car gets a bogus call about a fault in the hope that they customer won't return when they have a genuine complaint themselves.

The dealer ****ed up here by not checking the car out properly that he was taking as a trade-in from the OP. He has realized this and is now hoping the OP will panic and agree to pay. The way I see it a motor dealer would be deemed to be an expert in the field of appraising vehicles that they buy & sell for a living and should carry out due diligence on any vehicle they take as a trade in.

While it is not nice for anyone whether they are a customer or a dealer to be stung, the dealer really should have checked the car over at the time of doing the deal assuming the problem was present at that time.

Dealer has sold the car on, problem has presented itself, dealer is chancing his arm so as not to cover the warranty cost himself.

as you have a warranty with him just be firm but pleasant about it, just show him you know your not responsible for it rather than telling him what you really think !
