Hi lads, I recently got a new job with a bit of a commute - Ranelagh to Ashbourne so am fairly clocking up the miles. I have an '05 Golf but want to upgrade as Im spending about 75 quid a week on petrol. I want a newer car with better fuel efficiency. How much would I get for my Golf, theres about 135k on the clock? Ideally I would like another Golf or similar, would probably have about 8/9k to spend on top of what I get for the trade in.

    Any help/feedback would be appreciated

When trading in a car for a newer one, the most important figure is how much the garage want their way with your old car rather than the figure they are giving you for your old car. They could give you a super price for your Golf to make the deal look great but the car they are selling could then be overpriced to compensate.

€75 a week is just under €4k a year, you will struggle to buy anything that won't kill the savings in depreciation.

Cheers for replies lads, some good advice there. What are the most fuel efficient cars on the market? I don't really like hybrids though, I know would be the obvious answer!

How about a bluemotion golf 1.6diesel
Like this one but cheaper http://www.cargiant.co.uk/Volkswagen/Golf/details-716686-Volkswagen-Golf.asp
claims 80mpg on a long trip.
with a light right foot it could be economical.

your 05 1.4 petrol is worth 3/3.5 for a trade in

if you could get into a 1.6 diesel civic the fuel savings would be substantial.. but the year the 1.6 came out (think 2012?) might put them out of your budget..

yes of course whatever you buy will depreciate but there's something about having to only put 50 euro every fortnight into the car in fuel that feels better than putting in 85

Also check out honestjohn for the real world mpg of some of the cars.. i can vouch for my civic that im getting pretty close to the stated 74mpg on my commute up and down the m50 every day..
