Mullingar to feature in exciting new Greyhound Racing ventureAugust 18, 2015 15:119 viewsCategory: Sports > Other Tags: # Turf TV # IGB # Irish Greyhound Board # Irish Greyhound Racing
Earlier this summer, the Irish Greyhound Board (IGB) and Turf TV excitedly announced a new partnership, expanding the audience for Irish Greyhound Racing throughout the UK and Ireland. The initial 12 week trial period begins on 1st September, with the IGB amending racing schedules in 3 stadia to facilitate – Mullingar, Curraheen Park and Youghal.

The racing schedule in Mullingar will change for the initial trial period, with racing to take place on Sunday afternoons. Following this 12 week trial, Mullingar Greyhound Stadium will then welcome Christmas Party goers with racing on Friday and Saturday nights from 27th November.

Racing schedule from 1st September 2015*:
Mullingar – Saturday (1st Race at 7.45pm) and Sunday (1st Race at 3.14pm)
Curraheen Park, Cork – Tuesday (1st Race at 7pm), Friday and Saturday (1st Race at 8pm & 7.40pm respectively)
    Youghal – Monday (1st Race at 7pm)

The IGB is the regulatory body for greyhound racing in the Republic of Ireland, and during 2014 held 18,630 races at its 17 racetracks. Turf TV is a subscription channel distributing quality horse racing to over 10,000 licensed betting offices in the UK and Ireland. In October, the audience will expand to include a further 4 million online users with the facility to view the racing live.

Speaking at the announcement in June, Michael Conlon, Sales Director at Turf TV said “We are very excited about working together to grow Irish greyhound racing both in our core domestic market and internationally, and we are very confident that it will be a prestigious and attractive additional offering for our customers”.

Reports that all was not well with Curraheen Park’s performance in the Turf TV live broadcasting of Irish greyhound racing have been confirmed with news from across the water that the Cork track has been dropped from the schedule because of the poor betting percentages.

A look at the Curraheen results would have raised fears of such a happening and the rumours began circulating following last Tuesday’s meeting where the average margin was 163 compared with the required margin of the early to mid 130s. Indeed, one of the races on Tuesday featured a margin of 189 which made it totally acceptable for betting office punters.

A spokesperson for Turf TV has said that “it resulted in a bad experience for punters and it is a pity because everything else at the track was fine. We are going to replace it on Tuesdays with Tralee”.

Tralee Track has now been drafted in to fill the Tuesday slot vacated by Curraheen but the Kerry track is hardly noted for its healthy betting margins!

There has been no news from the Irish Greyhound Board as yet but obviously the Tuesday fixtures at Curraheen must now be in some doubt and one wonders will Thursday racing resume sooner than anticipated?

Were talking about the overround here?, if so thats so bad to see it laid bare like that but it shouldnt have come as any surprise and could have easily been identified before screening agreement with any type of research or previous results. Unless they expected it to improve considerably with the advent of it going live. Otherwise maybe there is another factor involved that they arent telling us.
