2001 Renault Master Mk2 - 1st gear won't engage

I have an early 2001 Renault Master van (a hand me down from a friend) that is refusing to engage first gear. I can get it into 2,3,4,5 and R. Yesterday the rest of the gears stopped working but that turned out to be a clip (c-clip?) holding the up-down linkage cable in place had come loose so the cable was slack. Putting the clip back in place fixed that.

I had a look at the gear linkage cables and there doesn't appear to be any obvious issues with the left/right selector cable.

I've tied a bungee cord around the gear stick to pull it to the left and tried engaging first by manually pulling the up-down lever on the transmission box, 1 still wouldn't engage. The gear stick moves with respect to pulling the lever on the transmission box and it is possible to engage 2, 3, 4 and 5 from the neutral position using this method.

Would anyone know if it is the just gear linkage or a more serious issue?

Apparently Synchro on 1st is gone. Need new gearbox.
