    Hi folks

I'm looking for recommendations for a commuter car. I drive about 600km a week, combination of windy back roads and m50. I'll occasionally have the kids in it (family car at home is an Octavia) so needs to be five door. Ideally something that is very reliable and fairly economical. Something 08 onwards hopefully so in lower tax bracket or is it more important to go for a lower mileage car? Thinking focus, corolla, fiesta etc. that is your challenge should you choose to accept it!

You will struggle to find anything diesel with respectable mileage or that isn't rough from 2008 onwards with cheap tax, for only €5k. Better off focusing on a car that is a little older but in better condition and has respectable mileage for the sake of trying to save a few quid on motor tax.

    Something like these:

Id go for something comfortable and preferably with cruise control... maybe volvo S40 or 60...

maybe something like this, leather interior, cruise control, 1.6 so relatively cheap motor tax...

110% the better and lower mileage car for the sake of e few euro in tax... you will be spending a lot of time in it! No way would I be doing that kind of mileage in the cars that you mentioned...

OP is looking for something very reliable though with space for a family. From previous experience of owning a diesel S40, a €5k example neither has alot of space or may not be a rock of reliability at this stage of it's life.

Thanks. Not so keen on the old volvos tbh, doesn't have to be diesel either but I'm guessing it does make a difference over that mileage. Those 1.6 Kias are looking good though. Might have to make the trip from blessington.
