Newspapers are unbelieveable in the sh*te they write. A few years back a KLM 744 made an emergency landing at Cork , fire in the hold indication which turned out to be a faulty sensor. The local rag here reported that the pilot disobeyed standing orders by landing in Cork because SNN is the nominated place to land for T/A emergencies.

That is true.... does Cork have the required fire category for a B747?

I would expect it has, there have been many 747 charters out of Cork in the 2000's, mainly for rughy and an odd one for Lourdes. Quantas even brought a load of UK publicans on a "jolly" for day trip using the one in the Aboregional colour scheme,"xxxxxx Dreaming" was the name used to describe it, can't think what the correct name is.

Cork is listed as Fire Category 7 with the ability to achieve category 9 with 48 hours notice. The 747 needs 9 but can drop down to 8 if required.

I hope that no Australians are reading this as their airline is spelt QANTAS, Queensland And New Territories Air Service if i remember correctly:)

Wunala Dreaming was the 744 in that scheme going on Wiki. Sounds about right from memory too

All that is just for planning purposes. In any case, the 'drop down' of one applies to a departure or destination airport, it can drop two if it's an enroute or other alternate (so 7 is ok for planning a 747). ETOPS alternates only require 4.

However, anything can happen in real life, so long as there's a good reason.

I've never been told that EINN is the nominated airport for TA emergencies out of Ireland though. I often have it as my ETOPS alternate though, again, purely for planning purposes.

It surprised me too, but I found that little nugget of information on boards during a discussion on Cork versus Shannon. Now i just have to find the official source again :)

I thought my spelling of it looked dodgy. How much of a difference is there between cat 7-9. Extra firecrew and appliances?

I guess that no one ever told them that it was cheaper to repair bent propellors that to repair shock loaded engines!

Looks like the Daily Mail are digging up some VERY old news on this one. This video is on YouTube from 2008.
