First Time Car Insurance

Okay so Im 20 with a provisional and no named experience so I was never expecting anything under €2000ish but Ive been getting quotes with all your typical companies that are supposedly great for first time drivers. Liberty, Axa, Asgard etc. And Ive been getting absolutely nowhere. All quotes above €4,000.

Even First Ireland quoted me €2800 (inc. discount)? Ive seen 18 year olds on a provisional on Boards say they pay between 1500-2000 so this makes no sense. Im getting quoted on 1 litre cars around 2001-2003 and I live in Kildare so a safe area.

Even when I say I have a full license just to check I still get quoted well above 3k. How in gods name can young drivers get on the road in this country?

The only reasonable quote Ive gotten is from BoxyMo but I really dont like the idea of my driving being tracked and being limited to 12-16000km a year. Ive been quoted 12,000km for €1500 which is great but from what I read theyre a pretty awful company to deal with on top of the fact that Ive no idea how much Km Id drive in a year.

    Any help/tips/advice please Im desperate.

12-16.000km would be a decent amount of distance per year - will you commute to work and if so how far is that?

I wouldn't worry too much about their Customer Service, presume you will be insuring for Third Party Fire & Theft and so you will not be dealing with them for a claim (in respect of your own car).

If they are fussy just make sure you are totally honest in all questions and keep the car NCT'd etc.

Stay with them 1 year, get the test passed, keep your nose clean and you will find a better range of options next year.

12,000km is quite a lot really, especially for a learner. I wouldn't sign up to boxymo either, purely for the tracking reason. But in all honesty, if you do it for a year to get some NCB and save yourself a boatload of cash at the same time. It may not be the worst of ideas.

Try Britton insurance brokers based in Donegal, they were always good for learner drivers. It may also be worth your while parking the idea of buying a car at all for now, get your lessons and any more that you may need and you may be able to go straight to a full test after yuo've had your permit for 6 months. The full license would save you considerable amounts.

16,000 km is also an option for €1700 with a possibility of an extra 3600km depending on how well I drive. I may just go with them for a year and see what kind of quotes Im looking at next year.

The thing about that is that I reckon it'd be extremely difficult for me to pass the test with only lessons. Ive done 9 at the moment and would consider myself a very competent driver but the test is a whole different story from what I hear.

Also, does anyone have any history with BoxyMo? Is the 16,000km or whatever I get split into monthly allowances? Can my premium possibly increase if I drive over the speed limit occassionally?

    Thanks!

Do you have a sibling/friend/parent with a full licence that you could add as a named driver onto your policy? My boyfriend bought my policy down by about €400.

Try adding someone else on the insurance that is older and has a full lisence, this may bring it down! Also ring as many brokers as you can. I got mine for 1600 with AA in the end for a 1.25 fiesta. That was with a learners permit and no experience. I'm 26 though! Still thought that was quite high, but many people I know have had insurance go up by loads this year!

The funny thing is my insurance is with Axa (through AA), which was 1600. Axa quoted me about 2500 themselves :/

i could try putting the car in someone else's name and going as a named driver. Bare in mind the person who's name you put it in will have no ncb though.

I got first-time insurance for €1,200 from Kennco.

However, I'm 10 years older than you, so obviously that has a significant impact on the premium.

Might be worth your while to give them a call, though.
