    Hi,

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, the company is discussed in another forum from the point of view of the merchant but I'm looking at this from the customer side.

I was out in a café recently and noticed that the person in front of me was paying by card on a chip and pin reader plugged into a smart phone. I had a look at it and it is called Sum Up. I hadn't seen one of these before so decided to pay by cash.

I had a look on their website and while it seems like they have found a niche business and low cost service for merchants they don't give much information to the customer in the way of security. Having worked on the hardware side of chip and pin in the past I know the security that was required (in my day) to make the inner workings inaccessible.

Does anyone have any more information on these? They seem to be quite popular and I'm sure will start appearing in more locations but I still don't know if I would trust it. Surely you are relying on the merchant having security on their smart phone and being honest since (for example) they could use their camera to record your pin number (it's a flat pin pad with no cover on it).

    Thanks,
    ATTY
