Only speculating but would it not make sense to raise the petrol prices during the summer months (Irish drive mainly diesel or so small engines that fuel cost is negligent, tourists are more likely to drive petrol and for longer distances)?

    Hi

The point im making is not necessarily about the price of petrol, its the difference between Petrol and Diesel prices - its now at 20 cent. This was usually about 10 cent.

mmm, dunno, presume by tourists you mean car rental, most cars for rent would be diesel as we are gone diesel mad in this country with hardly any new type cars being petrol now and most cars for rent are newish , meaning mainly diesel as a rental option

the diesel price is towards the low end and the petrol price is towards the high end. nothing more.

Did nobody tell you that falling diesel demand in Europe and increased refining capacity has led to the drop in wholesale diesel prices? As the crude oil price tumbled, both petrol and diesel went down quite low a few months ago, but then moved back up due to the weak Euro / $ exchange rate.

This is also reflected in pump prices in the North/UK where it's normally 6p a litre dearer for diesel. It is now below the price of unleaded, which is the first time in 14 years.

Petrol has dropped back 2 or 3 cents per litre in the last month along with diesel dropping 6-10.

A few winters back, demand was high, so the diesel price levelled or overtook the petrol price.

Time to second guess how cold/long the winter will be and fill up the kero for the house heating. (Just checked my way €570 for a 1000L, 3½ years ago it was €900! per 1000L)

any idea as to why the diesel demand is dropping ?

Why is diesel less expensive than petrol in UK now ?

or should somebody have told me all this already :)

Diesel fuel is more expensive to produce, and there's less demand for it in the UK than petrol, even in these evil days. It's kept artificially cheaper than petrol in this demented little backwater because... well, I dunno - because DAYSUL, bass!! :pac:

Diesel is more heavily taxed than petrol in UK so has always been more expensive, both are cheaper here due to lower tax rates and the terrible €-£ exchange rate means there is definitely no bargain to be had by crossing the border.

I don't think diesel is differentially taxed in the UK. It's taxed the same as petrol and comes out dearer because of the wholesale cost.

Most countries where it's cheaper than petrol is because those countries tax it considerably less than petrol.

Diesel is identically taxed in the UK. Here, petrol is 58.7c/litre and diesel is 47.9c/litre with a tiny bit of that made back in the carbon tax being higher on diesel due to its higher carbon volume. There's the NORA levy on that too, then VAT.

L1011 thanks. Good to know I'm dreaming these things up :). I think it's been that way (equal duty) since at least when Ken Clarke was Chancellor (early 1990s) if not Lamont.

Apparently, new diesel refining capacity has come on stream in Saudi Arabia, which is the main driver of the lower Diesel prices.

There's also the seasonal factor coming into play - Diesel fuel and home heating oil are closely related and demand for home heating oil drops during the summer.
