Dia doíbh. Tá mé burtha ma ta mo gaeilge rud beag briste, níl sé mo chead teanga.

Tá mé ag freastal ar gaelscoil agus cathaín ach an duine usaid an sloinne gaeilge s'acu. Tá ainm neamh-choiteannta agam, Cotter.

Deireann Google Mac Oitir no Mac Coitir. Cén cinn a bhfuil níos fearr agus cén baile a deireann tú é?

    Go raibh maith agaibh.

Tá roinnt mhaith daoine leis an sloinne sin i gCathair Chorcaí agus bhí aithne agam ar mhuintir Mhic Choitir i mBaile an Mhanaigh blianta ó shin. Déarfainn go bhfuil Mac Coitir an leagan ceart na laethanta seo. Féach ar an leathanach seo atá bunaithe ar Sloinnte na hÉireann-Irish Surnames le Seán de Bhulbh:
    SURNAME DICTIONARY/ SLOINNTE NA h-EIREANN
Cotter: Very numerous: mainly Cork and Munster, E Ulster. Ir. Mac Coitir, originally Mac Oitir, from a Norse personal name (the Gaels were quite prepared to adopt foreign names). The name has always been associated with Cork. IF.
Mac Coitir: Cotter: an-líonmhar: Mumhain, i gCorcaigh ach go h-áirithe. Ón ainm Lochlannach Ottar. Bhí siad suite ag Carraig Thuathail, Corcaigh.SGG & IF.
MacCotter: Quite numerous: Antrim etc. Ir. Mac Oitir, from Norse first name Ottar. Primarily Scottish as the name is always Cotter in the south and Irish is Mac Coitir.

Go raibh maith agat a Gaiscioch. Ní raibh mé i gCorcaigh riabh ach tá mo séanathair ó Port Lairge. Ní faigheann tú móran Cotters anseo i dTír Chonaill, Ó Gallachóir agus Ó Baoill uilig, aon rud eile agus is sasanach tú!
Beidh mé Mac Coitir ó seo amach.

An bhfuil an dearcadh seafóideach seo go coitianta fós?

Bhfeidir tá mé ag dul rud beag thar barr, ach tá mé ag deanamh go bhfuil dearcadh cúngaigeantach ag corr daoine níos sine. Níl siad uillig mar sin ach bhfeidir go bhfuil na daoine óga nios fearr mar tá nios mo tionchar ó áiteacha eile. Caithfidh tú coinneáil cuimhne, áit iontach iargulta é. Go hairithe san iarthuisceart.
